Sources: Baldwin to join Northwestern staff

Multiple sources told Purple Wildcats that former NU player and current Missouri State assistant coach Pat Baldwin is expected to round out the new-look staff at Northwestern.

If you need one word to describe early returns from the Chris Collins era, "efficient" might suffice.

Collins has brought positive attention to the Northwestern program – what 2013 commit Nate Taphorn called "electricity" – and already met with several impressive recruits.

Now, he's prepared to cement his coaching staff with the addition of Patrick Baldwin.

The former Northwestern player (1990-94) and current Missouri State assistant recently interviewed for an NU opening. Sources told that Baldwin is just about guranteed to join Collins in Evanston.

As reported by earlier this week, Philadelphia 76ers assistant Brian James will likely round out the impressive group — each of whom holds strong local ties.

A somewhat quieter candidate, Baldwin has attracted significant attention this offseason. One source told PW that he received an offer to join Tim Miles' staff in Nebraska. The longtime assistant, though, seems like an intriguing piece in this new-look staff that boasts diverse experience.

Tavaras Hardy is a highly touted recruiter who worked with the current group of players (and recruited Taphorn). James went from Glenbrook North HS to the NBA, where he assisted coaches such as Doug Collins and Lenny Wilkens. Baldwin would function as the staff journeyman who found success at various stops.

After beginning his career with stints at Lincoln University and Wisconsin-Green Bay, Baldwin continued his climb up the coaching ranks. He spent seven years at Loyola, where he earned praise for his recruiting efforts. Though his Missouri State team struggled in the 2012-13 season, Baldwin is an exciting local name.

Though one source said Collins seriously pursued Jon Scheyer, his former player recently accepted a position with Duke. Contrary to our sources from several weeks ago, Greg Paulus will not be an NU assistant.

An announcement on Baldwin and James could be made within the week. When the recruiting trail intensifies – beginning this weekend – the entire NU staff could already be in place.
