Practice Notes: Final Look

The latest from Northwestern's practice session in this Premium update.

Kain Colter was one standout during Northwestern's Wednesday night practice. After some spotty outings and accuracy issues earlier this month, he appeared confident and consistent. He fit passes into tight spaces, worked well in the screen game and looks ready for the opening week.

— One beneficiary of a solid passing attack was Rashad Lawrence. Despite earning the "possession receiver" label last season, Lawrence went to town on scout team cornerbacks. He flashed some impressive physicality and sure hands en route to his finest practice thus far.

Dan Vitale saw increased opportunities and simply dominated. The sophomore superback could be prepared for an even bigger role. He grabbed one sprawling touchdown and continues to prove himself as quite the offensive weapon for this team.

— My most important takeaway: Jeff Budzien launched kickoffs. That was one major question this offseason, but Budzien has stepped into this role with a flourish. We heard the cries: "Nice kick, Jeff" all the way from the sidelines.

— I'm a broken record now: Treyvon Green is back. With each practice comes increased confidence for the junior. I'd expect him to see a few carries depending on how the Cal game unfolds, as his stock continues to rise at the perfect moment.

— The scout team tried to speed the pace against the first-team defense. The defensive line ably applied the pressure on Matt Alviti before looking to make a serious dent into Cal and its "Bear Raid" offense.

— I'd also expect some interesting defensive tackle arrangements. By no means do I think this competition is finished. Will Hampton might use his experience to eventually climb the depth chart, though I'm also a fan of Chance Carter and think he deserved the starter's role for now.

— Some other standouts from Wednesday's session included Ifeadi Odenigbo and Stephen Buckley—two extremely promising redshirt freshmen.

As for the rest, we'll mix it up. Attached is my 50-minute podcast with the NU site West Lot Pirates, going over everything NU football. I hope the devoted readers will give it a listen; I included some personal background and previews for what's to come. (If you're short for time, start around the 38:40 mark.)
