JB Butler commits to NU as preferred walk-on

2014 OL JB Butler committed to Northwestern as a preferred walk-on Monday.

After several years of being recruited to Northwestern, J.B. Butler finally found his role. The 2014 offensive lineman from Joliet Catholic HS (Ill.) was accepted to NU and committed to the Wildcats as a preferred walk-on.

Butler joins a list of recent strong walk-ons including Graham Bullmore and Cole Johnson. Despite picking up an offer from Northern Illinois, he was sold on NU and its long-term promise. He texted PurpleWildcats.com with the exciting news on Monday night.

"They told me you'd have a chance to earn a scholarship," Butler told PW on Dec. 5. "I'd go in there with a lot of pride. I'd bust my butt every day."

He'll arrive to a fairly depleted offensive line that struggled for the better part of 2013. Perhaps Butler could end up a surprise success story, and at the very least, he earned the spot at his dream school.
