Chier Ajou to transfer from Northwestern

Redshirt freshman center Chier Ajou will transfer from Northwestern, giving Chris Collins room to operate on the transfer market.

In a move that should surprise no one, Northwestern basketball announced on Tuesday morning that redshirt freshman Chier Ajou will transfer from the program.

Ajou is the second departure of the Chris Collins era, following Mike Turner — who recently announced his intention to transfer.

The move, privately rumored for several weeks, opens up another scholarship for a transfer. With five scholarships filled for the 2014 recruiting class, NU felt it still needed additional pieces to compete in the Big Ten.

The Wildcats urgently need frontcourt help, which should be addressed on the transfer market. A source told that after the standard midseason transfer lull, NU expects to actively pursue every option available.

The major priority appears to be at power forward, given that they already considered eventual BYU transfer Jamal Aytes and Louisville transfer Chane Behanan (though Behanan will not be considered).

The process isn't complete. There's a very high possibility that someone from the current roster will transfer. Collins, in his first year, has undergone an effective and smart overhaul — dodging unused scholarships in the process.

With the team looking horrible – already below .500 fifteen games in – it makes sense for Collins to focus on the future. This latest move signifies one thing: They're poised to compete next season.
