David and Andrew Dowell commit to NU

David and Andrew Dowell committed to Northwestern on Sunday. The four-star twins could change the face of the program.

All offseason, Northwestern fans wondered whether Pat Fitzgerald could retain the momentum. The Wildcats lost seven games and had four de-commitments from the 2014 class.

That was only compounded by a lull early in the recruiting process. Several players spoke of NU highly, but entering this weekend, the Wildcats had yet to earn a commitment.

Everything changed when Nathan Fox, Tommy Vitale and John Moten committed to NU in quick succession. The three are solid-to-good players reminiscent of most Wildcats commits.

Then, wow. Per Allen Trieu of Scout.com, four-star twins Andrew and David Dowell committed to Northwestern on Saturday. One four-star prospect seems like a big deal here; two on the same day is monumental. David will play wide receiver; Dowell will play running back.

Andrew spoke to PurpleWildcats.com last month about the strong mutual interest. He picked up an offer a while after his brother, and the two wanted to play together.

They visited Northwestern—for the third time—to see the open spring practice. Apparently, that visit proved enough for surprising and stunning early pledges.

So in three days, there have been five commitments made official. There's usually the "domino effect" in recruiting, with everyone looking to take spots. Occasionally, it involves something even better.

The two are top recruits. They believe in the combo of "academics and athletics," Andrew said. Well, the future of NU is bright—and it came on a weekend when we least expected it.
