Still, they needed a school that was compatible to both of their wishes. And thankfully for Northwestern, that involved the combination of football and academics.
The Dowells capped the weekend by committing to Northwestern on Sunday night. They called Pat Fitzgerald by speakerphone, and the head coach "started yelling."
"It can't get any better than Northwestern," David told PurpleWildcats.com shortly after his commitment.
The two made their return trip to NU last weekend for the team's open spring practice. They stayed overnight and both "felt at home" during the process. Since then, they researched more elements of Northwestern and were comfortable making the early decision together.
"We're very close. We were pretty much on the same page," David said. "Me, Andrew, my dad and my mom communicated together about it. We felt pretty good."
The decision ended a gradual but strong recruitment. NU offered David in January, and when they followed suit with Andrew two months later, there was an immediate positive response.
"I was very excited about it," David said. "Even back then, Andrew and I liked Northwestern even though they had offered me a little bit before."
The two had overlapping offers including Tennessee, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Kentucky. Many recruiting analysts figure they would have received more, but NU swept in at the perfect moment.
David will play cornerback and Andrew will play running back for Northwestern.
