This week, Sam Darnold competed in the Elite 11 camp. He left with a "gold shirt," Trent Dilfer's praise, and a quickly rising profile.
Northwestern may have reached him just in time.
The 2015 three-star quarterback from San Clemente (Calif.) told PurpleWildcats.com he would visit Evanston this week.
Though weather and geography are driving factors in his decision, NU has a crucial opportunity to impress him.
"If I go up to Northwestern, and I really like what I see and how I feel, anything could happen," Darnold said.
Utah is considered the favorite, but Darnold holds other offers from Tennessee, Duke, Nevada and Wake Forest.
He told PurpleWildcats that he hopes to make his decision by the end of June—a bonus for those, like NU, who offered early.
McCall offered Darnold three weeks ago after watching him throw in the wind. Pat Fitzgerald then offered Darnold, calling it a "great fit" and persuading him to visit campus.
It's an outside chance, but you never know: NU might be on its way to landing three elite quarterbacks in consecutive years.
"No doubt Northwestern is a great academic school," Darnold said. "That's just amazing in itself.
"I want to try to build on that and take some more steps with the coaches there."
We'll have the latest of Darnold and other key visits.
