Roberts earning early comparisons to Mark

Jelani Roberts reminds the coaching staff of another undersized prospect.

Jelani Roberts traveled to Northwestern and then left.

The 2015 wide receiver from Baltimore (Md.) Gilman participated at NU camp—and had no idea of his status until a day later.

Then, the NU coaching staff informed Roberts that he earned an offer. He needed to return.

"I was pretty excited," Roberts said of his offer. "I needed to come back to campus and meet some of the coaches and players."

Roberts arrived at NU on Monday and quickly realized that this was his ideal destination. First, he understood "the best of both worlds," and an academic combination that made sense.

"That's a big selling point for me especially," he said. "They have a great coaching staff and great guys."

The other selling point was obvious. Roberts runs a sub-4.4 40 but lacks the prototypical size at 5-foot-7, 153 lbs.

The Wildcats, of course, have recently excelled with undersized players, and Roberts said he understood the tradition.

"I was pretty aware of that," he said. "One of the guys I like to watch a lot is Venric Mark.

"They compared me to him a couple of times which is great considering I've been watching him for a little while."

Roberts officially becomes the 14th commit in Northwestern's recruiting class of 2015.
