Basketball Prospects in our Backyard!

We all know about the miles Bill Carmody and his assistants log looking for players with the right combination of Basketball ability and the academic interest to be able to come to play in Welsh-Ryan.

There just might just be a few prospects down the road in Skokie...

Those of you who are checking the Pioneer Press web sites should keep an eye on Niles West HS...
There's a story by Dennis Mahoney in the Skokie Review about some basketball prospects in the immediate area and they're being looked at favorably by the Northwestern Basketball Recruiters.

For those of you who want some "deep background," one of our favorite sources fills us in about three prospects who just might be interested in playing at NU...
One of the key players mentioned here is junior Sead Odzic, who Northwestern is after for the 2005 class.

They may also be checking out the 6-foot-3 sophomore Victor Colon, and there's no real NU news about another top prospect, the senior Jarryd Loyd, who has offers from Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Illinois State, Valpo, Dayton and Indiana State. My source says Loyd does have the grades and Odzic is an exceptional student. As always, its hard to get "under the table" confirmation on NU Basketball recruiting, unless the kids tell us...Obviously, we'll get these guys into the Scout Database.

In case you're not paying attention to the Chicago-North Suburban sports scene, Niles West, which is located in Skokie and just a 10-minute drive from Northwestern, has suddenly become a hotbed for athletes. NU already has two former Wolves on its baseball team - Jason Krynski and incoming frosh pitching standout George Kontos.

This source tried to convince Kevin O'Neill to look at a Niles West kid, 6-foot-8 Derek Reich, a few years ago. The response? "Why do I need Derek Reich when I have Steve Lepore." Duh! We all know what happened next; Lepore leaves for Wake Forest, and all Reich did was break all the scoring (including 3-point) and rebounding records at University of Chicago and was the University Athletic Assn. player of the year this year after averaging 25.4 ppg and 9.2 rpg.
Like I always say down below...Send your back door info to Purple Reign at the e-mail below if you have a line on any prospects, especially basketball. We'll keep your name off the story if you want to remain anonymous. Just keep them cards and letters [and e-mails] comin'....
