NU AD Mark Murphy on Bowls

A Letter to Wildcat Fans from the AD

Northwestern Athletic Director Mark Murphy sent this out to the various lists yesterday -
December 3, 2003

Dear Wildcat Football Fans,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support during the 2003 Football Season. We are very happy with the way our team rebounded this year, providing all of us with four very gratifying wins over our Big Ten rivals. Randy Walker deserves a lot of the credit, as our team did not give up when we were 2-4 in mid-October. In fact, this marks the FIRST TIME SINCE 1899 that Northwestern has had a team that was able to overcome such a rough start and end the season at .500! Additionally, this year's team is only the eighth in NU history to win six or more games.

We are also very excited about the strong possibility of the Wildcats playing in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit on December 26, 2003! Therefore, I thought it might be useful to fill our loyal fans in on the 'Cats chances of going to a bowl game and how you can obtain tickets.

After beating the Illini in exciting fashion to become bowl eligible (and take back the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk), it became quite clear that our best shot of going to a bowl game is if Ohio State receives an at-large BCS bid to play in either the Orange or Fiesta Bowls. At the present time, this looks like a very good possibility. If this scenario holds true, the Motor City Bowl would then, most likely, extend an invitation to us, which we would enthusiastically accept.

If this does play out, we hope that you will join the Wildcats in Detroit as we take part in our fifth bowl in program history! Our fans have done a terrific job of traveling with us to the three most recent bowls, and we truly need your support at the Motor City Bowl as well.

To that end, we ask that you buy your tickets through the Wildcat Ticket Office so that we can show future bowl selection committees how much support we have. This is really the only way we can legitimately gauge the number of fans that travel to our bowl sites and it helps us build a track record with the various bowl committees. The reality of the situation is that numbers talk (attendance, travel history, season tickets sold, donations, television ratings, etc.) and your participation does make a difference!

We will find out if we are selected on Sunday, December 7. However, you will be able to make reservations for tickets prior to that date. As information becomes available, we will update you by e-mail and on the Bowl Hotline at (847) 467-1300. In addition, Northwestern Alumni Association will host a game-day tailgate. Links to register for tickets and the tailgate will be accessible via the Athletics Web site (, the Alumni Association Web site ( and the University's home page (

If you have any questions, or require more information, please call the Wildcat Ticket Office at 847-491-CATS.

Go 'Cats!
