A road win where we played well.

They finally did it - the scrappy Northwestern Wildcats played a complete game Saturday afternoon

They made their shots and beat us and we did not play well. We scrapped some in the first half but we looked like a team in my opinion that lacked confidence in itself. While they got stronger, we got weaker and that's unfortunate. -- post game quote from BGSU Coach Dan Dakich
The NU Wildcats came out and looked sloppy early in the game with Bowling Green Saturday...
Between missed layups and some ragged play, Cat fans had to be a little nervous about this game in a small gym [4700 seats], with the crowd right on the floor. The bright spot early was Davor Duvancic's fast 11 points on a bunch of 3 pointers -- for a while, he was all of the NU Offense.

But NU Coach Bill Carmody used the small gym to inspire both our Croat's, Davor [13 total] and Vedran Vukusic [20 points/5 boards]...
I told them both that the gym I saw you guys in Split Croatia, wasn't half as nice as this, small and beat up and not to say that, this is a very nice gym here -- [but] the fans are on you and so they came out and they both were knocking them down.
It seemed that Vedran Vukusic came out in the 2nd half with more determination...
After the last game we talked, we had to start doing more...in that Florida State game he got only two shots, he was trying a little bit against Bucknell but even in the first half tonight, I don't know if it showed up, but he was attempting, he was just putting the ball on the ground and trying to figure out what would happen -- you know being aggressive.

You're right, in the 2nd half he got them down low, we told him "get the ball down there quit thinking pass first, try to score, you'll figure it out if they double team you."
And then Jitim Young [23 pts, including 9 of 10 FTs and 5 rebounds] stepped up in the 2nd half too - scoring in every way...
The big guy was guarding him and we just eluded him, Jitim's out on a wing there, and we said "lets just start driving Jitim" and he made some nice moves himself and found the first play in the 2nd half, we ran a set play for him and if its not there the next option is Vedran, he found him in the corner -- the right hand corner and he [Vukusic] knocked down a 3 and so its good to see him do that because that helps his game immensely.
Mohammed Hachad [12 points including 2-5 from the arc] seemed to really play defense in the 2nd half...3 steals, including a fast break where he took the ball away from one of the Falcons...
Yeah, he made a really good defensive play. I couldn't really see it, I think he just stripped him and hung on to it. Usually those go off somebody's knee and go out of bounds but...

He played well. Its Mohamed. I want him to play well for 40 minutes and he's playing well for 6 minutes here and just so-so for 3 minutes and good for 6 minutes and we talked to him. "Why can't you continually and consistently play well?" because you can see he made some moves there when the clock was going down.

He made a cross over that "whoa" -- unbelievable.
How does the win going into the Layoff help the team...
I just think it helps the guys. They're feeling a little bit better about themselves, maybe they'll get some A's and B's. You know we actually go to school here.

Our guys go to school and class and so when you're feeling good about yourself, studying isn't so bad. We had books last night on the bus ride in and the plane, they're going to have them as soon as they go back. That's what they're here for.
And you're feeling a little better too, right?
Yeah, I'm enjoying it -- its just nice -- like I said a road win is just very good and I thought a road win where we played well.
And some Kudos from BGSU Coach Dan Dakich
"That's (Northwestern) the best team that has come in here since I have been coach. I don't know where they are going to end up in the Big Ten, but I know they play really, really hard and very, very well."
Recapping our Pregame Intel Report Challenges:
Our comments on how we did in italics
Contain the high scoring forwards - we haven't been able to really shut down any of the inside gunners lately. The Falcons leading scorer is a forward, and their most accurate shooter also plays up front. Something new for defense this week.
Josh Almanson got 11, but he was only 5 of 9 from the floor , we held Cory Eyink to 7 points, 2 for 7 from the floor. Austin Montgomery, starting as a forward today had 11 points .
Kevin Netter - I remember him from last year, he's a decent scoring center - averaging double figures and has a block in each game - He's another big man in the middle to deal with.
Netter was 8 for 8 before he got 4 fouls, he almost disappeared then. He also only had 2 rebounds in his 29 minutes.
Keep the Bombers quiet - four different Falcons have attempted more than 10 3 pointers this year [4 games], in fact the team averages 16 outside shots a game. You can count on any of them to try to shoot from the arc. We've got to keep them far enough away to keep that average at .323 [21-65].
Bowling Green shot .267 [4 for 15] from beyond the arc - 'nuff said.
Get some rebounds- not easy against these guys, they're almost +6 in rebounds against opponents. NU's leading rebounder is Jitim Young, 6-1 Forward/Guard. This game will be a challenge for Vedran Vukusic and Davor Duvancic our big guys up front.
The Cats had 17 defensive rebounds to 21 for Bowling Green. We were out rebounded 35 to 22.
Take care of the ball - Last game was great, 10 turnovers - the Falcons are -3.5 on turnovers so far - they average over 18 per game. Just what T.J. Parker, et. al. love to hear.
Man did they turn the ball over, we didn't. They had 16 TO's, we had 11. Both teams had 6 steals.
Score off of turnovers - do the math - 18 TO's a game should be 36 points for the opposition. We need to make those layups Saturday.
The Cats just couldn't get a layup to fall early. Had we made all the "bunnies" we took in the first half, the score would have been 87 to 60!
Watch out for another high scoring guard - don't forget that the star of their last game was a freshman playing guard - Montgomery's 20 points was the only bright spot for the Falcons last Saturday.
OK, today he started at forward. Montgomery had 11 points but was only 4 of 10 from the floor. He also had 4 turnovers.
Put the game away - if we manage to get up on them by any margin. Everyone has to score down the stretch.
We finally kept scoring at the end of a game where we had a big lead. The cats actually shot better from the floor [14 of 15/56%] in the 2nd half.
Play well on the road - We're only the 4th Big 10 team to visit BGSU. The Falcons are 2-1 against the Big 10 at home,
The Cats took the Falcons down to a 2-2 at home mark with Big 10 teams.
The Cats now get a well deserved rest as they head into finals and a week of practice before they face the Arizona State Sun Devils at Welsh-Ryan.
