The Wildcats came in to their last Home game of the year looking to even the record against the Michigan Wolverines, and finish 2 games over .500 in Big 10 play. But it wasn't to be, as Michigan proved to be too athletic and held off the cats.
The Wolverines got 16 from Daniel Horton, and 14 From Lester Abram as they shot 51% from the floor and 54+% from the arc, compared to Northwester's 35% from the floor and 22% from 3 point land. Michigan had 21 turnovers, [The Cats had 11 steals] but just NU couldn't capitalize on the sloppy play.
After the game, Bill Carmody talked with the crowd [and WGN] and was asked about playing with maybe too much emotion, maybe too tight?
I don't think they were tight, I wasn't unpleased with the first half, I thought both teams were feeling each other out a little bit and I wasn't displeased. The game started off real quick for the Cats, then backed off. [Davor Duvancic plays some D - left] You normally don't like to play that fast, but you forced Michigan into some quick turnovers.
In the second half it gets down to shooting the ball. It looked like we had some easy shots and it was fitting, the last two layups we had, we missed them. So Vedran and Mo had shots, a couple might have been ill advised, but for the most part we got the shots we wanted and if they out rebounded us, which I'm sure they did, its mostly because we missed so many shots. Its a lot more rebounds.
I thought our defense was pretty good, I thought their D, I thought it was a pretty good game to tell you the truth, both ways and we had some pretty good looks -- we're trying to get the ball to Vedran [Vukusic] , I don't know what he shot but for the most part he had some pretty good looks and missed them, and in the first half, missed a couple of layups, but that's ...This was a tough matchup for the Cats -- they got the putbacks and the shots from their top players.
But I thought they played hard, they were trying and there was a lot of emotion in a day like today, but I don't know if that effected us too much, you have to give Michigan credit, they played hard, Robinson banged a big 3 was important, and they made big plays when they had to - its tough to win on the road, and they did.
There are certain things you can do with the guys on the perimeter, I thought we did OK , there were a couple of key baskets, rebounds they put back in after bad misses, I don't know if we didn't box out, or size was too much, or they got some easy hoops on us.Early in the game it seemed the Ivan Tolic had some good minutes.
I thought that for the first ten minutes we were pretty good, and then it seemed like we had slacked off for 5 minutes both ends and then towards the end of the half we had a little more energy. Davor [Duvancic] run that play just so he could get a wide open shot and got it , you have to make that play.Any thoughts on how the Tournament sets up?
He missed ours, and it seemed they made the plays when they had to.
Well, I'd like to get the bye.
We're very thin playing 6 - 7 guys maybe, so its not possible to win 4 games in a row, its hard, almost impossible.Overall your thoughts on NU's Big 10 Season.
So if we get a bye, we can rest up a little bit, rest up a day, we can go Friday, Saturday, Sunday, maybe we can do that. Four games would be very, very difficult. And just because it was 6-11, 11 can beat you.
Penn State, Minnesota, they can beat you, so we're rooting for Purdue right now.
What can you fault -- the effort's there. Some carelessness, we had 4 or 5 turnovers in the first half on the break, but lets say there's some emotion involved effects it, but they hustled their tails off.But if you could go out with a win in Indianapolis [Big 10 tournament[ or beyond Indianapolis, you'd take that...
Again, we were coming up with steals, and T.J. [Parker] was a large part of that, it seemed like, in the last 6 minutes, and so I thought the guys did well, its "horse" you gotta make shots -- must make shots.
And Jitim, I wish he could have gone out with a win here but he played well, played hard, he gets that little 3 point play, and that play was so typical of his four years here, him going up with guys 6-10 and two hands on the ball, get fouled and he made the foul shots, might be a little a-typical, but a hell of an effort from that kid, and just a really special guy.
[No comment from the Coach]So the Cats wait to see where they are seeded.
Next game is either Thursday or Friday.
