For a guy who is so obsessed with statistics, who's nickname around his town is the Statmaster, I have a hard time keeping track of won-lost records.-- da Coach
If it wasn't for Northwestern's Sports Info office putting the record in parens after the team names, I'd never remember records, etc.
So a win in tonight's game would guarantee the Cats a .500 record for 2003-04. Even if we lost the semi-final game, we'd be 15-15, if my mental calculator is working. It would also make our Wildcats eligible for the National Invitational Tournament.
In our Statisticly obsessive Pregame Intel Report, we were a little nervous about playing the Nittany Lions again. There was something about the matchups that bothered me. Apparently I wasn't alone.
According to the quotes, NU Coach Bill Carmody was jumpy prior to Penn State last night. He to responsibility for passing those jitters to the team, but NU Assistant Paul Lee said in the WGN post-game that Carmody's style in the huddle during the game is to calm his players down -- obviously that worked.
So if the BC keeps our guys calm tonight and tomorrow, and Cats pull off two more - we'd finish 1 game over .500. Would the NCAA come calling?
Especially since to get those wins, the Cats would have to beat MSU for the first time this year and probably Wisconsin again. A pretty daunting task.
I'd prefer 3 more wins - and the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, but as Paul Lee said last night - "Its good to advance"
And all the Wildcat fans say, "Amen."
