SjT-View From the Stands: KU vs NU

In the wacky world of college football, it all makes sense-Gain fewer yards, Score fewer points, Win your first game after two close losses.
Most fans came to Ryan Field on a picture-perfect early autumn Saturday expecting another game with lots of offense and a close finish for NU's Cardiac Cats vs Kansas. They got that in the fourth quarter - for the first three, NU was killing drives while KU couldn't even get a drive going against an injured but fired up Wildcat defense.

Band Day returned to Evanston for the rare 1 p.m. kickoff, and so did a lot of the students, who still have a few days before classes begin.

A good number of Jayhawk fans made the trip as well, but while they had the zeal, they lacked the numbers ASU brought to Evanston last week. But everyone who showed up really could have spent an extra hour or two at the tailgate.

The first half could very well have had some crime scene tape around it with an officer announcing "nothing to see here." The TV cameras were gone and so were the big plays and points from the Wildcats and their opponents. The Cats managed some yardage between the 30s, but killed drives with penalties and sacks, Kansas couldn't get anything going for the first 30 minutes aside from one long pass play of the fullback out of the backfield that was well set up. The Jayhawks only managed a field goal after the big pass play, and that answered NU's field goal after squandering excellent field position when KU botched a punt. Both sides also missed long field goals, so as the teams headed for the locker room, the score was 3-3.

The Cats continued to drive well and finished one with six in the third quarter when Brett Basanez completed an impressive march with a 2-yard touchdown run. A later drive stalled inside the 10 and NU settled for the field goal. With the final 15 minutes approaching, Northwestern's defense had been solid all day and was finally getting some well-deserved love from the fans.

(Soapbox o' the week: Kansas and ASU fans were boisterous and hopefully showed the NU faithful that it's permitted and actually ENCOURAGED to stand and make noise during a football game! Especially when the defense is trying to make a stand. New rule: NO ONE SITS ON THIRD DOWN!
Get up, make some noise and get in the game!). Back down from the box, while the D was doing its part, the Wildcat offense had stumbled and squandered chances to blow the game open. Some drive-killing penalties and ill-advised sacks (Baz has gotta learn to read the blitz or at least get rid of the ball) kept Kansas in the game. And even though NU was dominating this game, no one in the stands thought it was over.

Northwestern was playing with fire and got burned in the fourth quarter, as fireworks erupted, Kansas started to move the ball and the offenses began to show up to make this into a shootout again. The Cats had been playing admirably on defense, shuffling in players as yet another leader (Adam Kadela - who was off to a good start) was knocked out of the game.

We stuffed the run and while not playing great in the secondary, at least our guys were hanging with the wideouts and we didn't have any coverage breakdowns like the ASU game last week. We even had a few legitimate coverage sacks (couple that with two touchbacks in a row on kickoffs and all that was missing was an appearance by Haley's Comet).

Our biggest problem was getting off the field on third down. We would put the Jayhawks in third and long, and they'd manage to convert. The first play of the game, KU bobbled the snap and just heaved the ball up to avoid a sack ... for a 12 yard gain. Later in the game on 4th and 15, a well-timed blitz managed to tip the Jayhawk pass up in the air ... only to be caught for 18 yards and a first down. We were close to making the plays, which was an improvement over last week, but not there yet. Kansas also was aided by finding an advantage with receiver Brandon Rideau, who had a few inches on Jeff Backes. KU's Adam Barmann [AP Photo - left] connected with Rideau for two quick TD strikes in the fourth -- both of which had decent coverage -- and the Cats' failure to put the game away had caught up with them, as Kansas now led 17-13.

After last week's game, coach Walker decried a lack of passion on his team. And while the D had been playing well, there hadn't been much passion on offense most of the day.

Then came the winning drive. Momentum was on the Jayhawks' side, but we had time and three timeouts left, so all we needed was the leadership and confidence to emerge from this team. Someone fired the troops up, because they came out blazing. The first play was a great call, a 52-yard screen pass to Mark Philmore that got the juices flowing again. A few plays later, Basanez threw a TD strike to Brandon Horn [AP Photo Right] and NU had the lead.

It was almost too quick - and there was a lot of game after the winning score. KU mounted a final drive that came down to a missed field goal that -- if wide -- was only wide by an inch or two. And there was also a rather confusing and potentially disastrous series of play calls by NU while running out the clock. Let's just say that they didn't learn Barry Alvarez' lesson in '96 about taking a knee ... thankfully for the Cats, we didn't have Ron Dayne to cough up the ball.

But those are all secondary thoughts right now. The Cats finally got the win. Like the first two games, they mounted a drive to take the lead late, but this time, we put it in the end zone and sealed the deal. No turnovers, no close-but-no-cigar. We got the win we needed and hopefully found some fire and leadership on this team. We didn't have the big numbers on offense, but we didn't dig an early hole either - we had passion, made the plays when it counted and didn't turn the ball over.

It was also a fairly well-called game by the Northwestern coaching staff. They mixed the defensive formations well (sometimes by force with the injuries) and we even had a nice safety blitz that worked.

On offense, we were pretty vanilla in the first half, throwing only short. But that was all to set up a double-move route, and sure enough, first drive of the second half, we had a beautiful stop-and-go call with a Baz pump fake that was a sure touchdown had the Kansas defender not tackled the wideout after being beat to get the flag for interference. We need to do some more of those double-move patterns.

I'd also like to see us run up the gut a little more with our line, but with Herron still suffering some from last week's concussion, I understand that Jordan is better at hitting the outside corner. We also had a few well-timed screen calls, especially the final one to Philmore that was set up beautifully by a misdirection rollout the other way.

Not our best game of the year, but a win and a much-needed boost heading into the Big Ten season. After watching Arizona State absolutely demolish Iowa and seeing other Big Ten teams with new quarterbacks and running backs stumble, there's definitely some room for hope with NU if they can play consistently. There's no game left on our schedule that's unwinnable.

Our two toughest-looking foes, OSU and Purdue, come to Evanston. We need to win some league games to get back in the hunt and that starts next week with a winnable matchup in the Metrodome against a high-powered Minnesota ground attack.

SjT GAME BALLS
* Mark Philmore: Fields' prime-time performance in the opener got all the hype, but Philmore's developed into NU's top receiver, with consistent efforts, solid catches and good running after he gets the ball. Baz is spreading things around nicely, but in the clutch, Philmore's the one he looks to.

* The front seven: Winning the line of scrimmage and taking away a team's ground game will go a long way to beating Big Ten foes. Kansas never got the running attack going and despite some shifting around to cover holes, the Cats front seven won the war in the trenches all day.

THINGS TO WORK ON
* Penalties: We've done a good job cutting down on our two nemesis from last year - penalties and turnovers - but still have a problem when they pop up at the worst of times. We crossed the 50 four of our first five drives, yet had three points. At least two of those drives died on penalties. Think guys!

* Seize the moment: I realize we haven't had much practice playing with the lead this year, but we had plenty of opportunities to put this game away before the fourth quarter. It all started after the blocked punt. First and goal and all we get is three points? Think six.

* The ground game: Gotta get more consistent, especially with our line's experience. Third and short should be automatic with the big fellas in front of Noah Herron [AP Photo - right] and Terrell Jordan.

AROUND THE HORN
* Say what you want, but OHIO STATE just keeps winning. It may not be pretty, but with the way other teams' kicking games are going, their combo of D and special teams looks darn good right now.

* A 9-7 win in Tuscon? WISCONSIN is the ugliest 3-0 team in the Big Ten. But see Ohio State (or Georgia for that matter) ... the W is all that counts.

* MICHIGAN almost got caught in that doughnut game between the Irish and Hawkeyes ... the big problem is, they've looked plain awful the past two weeks. Fortunately for them ...

* IOWA looked even worse in the desert. Seeing how poorly IOWA handled Arizona State has to give the Cats' O and D a little boost. A second straight road loss for the Hawks this week in Ann Arbor could be a huge turning point in the season for a young team.

* The party's over in Bloomington (or maybe it lasted too long from last week) as INDIANA kicks the bucket against Kentucky. They still can make a big bowl run, but will the fans and team now give up and just take Oregon as a fluke? That'll be a big thing to watch - are they ready to rebound from a tough loss?

* A last-second score needed to beat Western Michigan at home? The Turner watch is definitely on at ILLINOIS. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

* MINNESOTA and PENN STATE looked good, but not terribly impressive in winning. MICHIGAN STATE looked awfully sloppy in their loss. Another Big Ten team not ready for prime time, unfortunately.
