This almost turned out to be the Noah Herron/O-Line show...
but the real credit goes to the NU Defense. They held PSU's Zack Mills to 183 yards passing [21 for 34]. They sacked Mills twice, and only allowed them into the end zone once. There still more tape - From Noah Herron and Luis Castillo coming...
Yes, NU did make the offensive plays against the vaunted Penn State D, but Brett Basanez, Noah Herron and the rest of the NU offense ran up 186 yards on the ground and 205 yards in the air. Right guard Matt Ulrich led the way several times on Herron rushes - including Noah's TD - and left guard Ikechuku Ndukwe led the way, pumping his fist on Terell Jordan's first score.
The Cats did close out the game needing to run off 3:27, and turned to Herron for 5 consecutive carries on which he got 2 first downs and 30 yards, before the Cats ran off the final seconds.
After the game, NU Coach Randy Walker reflected on the first win ever at Beaver Stadium.I'm really proud of our kids. I thought it was a very courageous effort, I thought it was a very unselfish effort, we had a lot of guys sacrifice trying to find a way and you know, it wasn't a game of perfect, we had some things go haywire, we had some injuries that hurt us early and got us out of some things, but I'm really proud of the way our kids played.Start by talking about only allowing 280 yards on Defense- 97 yards rushing. We're getting better and better on that side of the ball, just like we thought we would.Especially on the last Penn State drive - 3rd and 10, then 4th and 10 but you kept them out of the endzone.
We had some guys getting back healthy on that side of the ball and guys flying around and playing - again, I'm really proud of that side of the ball. We went through some tough things earlier in the season and now we find we're hitting our stride and we have a chance to be really strong on that side of the ball. They got it right down there and every play could be a touchdown play. They're in scoring zone and again, we boat up, we play courageously, we flew around, they were on the field a lot today - you saw the condition level we expressed today and the courage. I can't be more proud of a bunch of guys.NU also ran up 380+ yards and put up 14 points on a team that is top 5 in many defensive categoriesI was really proud of the way we ran the ball. This is a good defense, they were 7th in the country in total defense. Was the key drive the 83 yard, 2nd TD drive that put the Cats up 14-7?
We didn't have the production on the scoreboard we'd like for that many yards, but a lot of it again - I was playing a very conservative game there today - I thought our defense was handling things well and so we didn't take a lot of unnecessary risks out there. I thought Mike [Dunbar] did a great job calling the right things and kind of keeping it on the ground, running a lot of time off the ball and off the clock and our offensive line played like champions. It was, and of course the last drive was pretty big because the way I figured I got a little chart out there - they could get the ball back with a minute and a half if we don't get a first down. Then we got a first down so quick they still could get it back - we needed two first downs so again...What about playing next week in the Big House?"
I'm big on finish, I talk about finish all the time and that's the way you finish out there as a football team. There's no question that's a big game - its Michigan and one of the great programs in the country. How do you feel?
Now obviously if we have our mind in our business - we stayed on Penn State - there's never any secret where Michigan falls on the schedule - so we're looking forward to playing well - we're going to have to play better to get a great Michigan team.
They're in the driver's seat for the Big 10 Championship, so we're going to have to do some things better, have a great week of work because the tape I've seen on Michigan, they're a great, great football team.It feels good.
My health really took a turn for the better Wednesday, I started feeling a lot better. Of course I felt pretty good all the time, but I started feeling better last week and I'm still - takes its toll on me out here, this is a little longer than you want it to be - I'll rest pretty easy on that flight back home.
