Even though Noah Herron outrushed Michael Hart by 5 yards - Hart had 3 TDs to Noah's 1 - and even though NU had 421 yards of offense to Michigan's 405, it was the ball in the endzone that decided this one, and Chad Henne had two TD passes, and Hart had 3 TD rushes. The Wolverine defense kept the Cats out of the endzone until it was too late, and gave NU another loss on the road. After the game, Head coach Randy Walker talked a bit about this game with Ted Albrecht:
They were hitting on all eleven cylinders today. I just told our football team, we've got to give credit to them first. They made ... mistakes but they took it too us, they executed extremely well. I think they came out in the second half and put it together. They came out a little rusty after a week off, they came out in the second half and put it together. The Cats finished the first half close - and with a couple of sacks, but they brought back the "juice" after halftime...
We, however, I thought we played hard - we didn't make enough plays to stay with a great football team like that and they do have a lot of weapons as we talked about all week, and they displayed them all today but I'm proud of our kids and I told them that. I said, "I said we have a good week of work, they made some plays and we didn't, some things escaped us on the field but we still have a lot to play for - we'll play hard next week."
Well I think it did - they answered very well, as you know, they came out in the second half and they answered the bell. We were not ... they took it to us and to give credit they executed extremely well.NU is putting up the yards, but not the points and the wins...
But I thought we came out of this pretty well, I think there's some things we learned. We need to get one week better, I say that each week but its still true. I think we need to make that same stride and I believe our football team will take that same step.
[first part covered up by the Band] We haven't put as many points on the board. maybe, as the total offense would indicate, but then again, I'm pretty proud of the way our football team has played to this point and again we don't find ourselves exactly where - we'd ike to be 10-0 this week, but based on how we started the season out and where we've come, I not pleased with where we're at.Next is Illinois and the Cats are still in the Bowl hunt...
We need to take another big step this week.
I think we have the kind of leadership and the kind of poise and things it takes to take that step after a disappointing game today, and we're all disappointed - we didn't come in here to do anything but win and you don't get a win and you expect to, its going to sting for a while, but this team has been a resilient football team all year and we've bounced back from this situation before and I fully expect us to.
I told our football team that, some things were taken away from us today. But there's still a lot to play for - a lot left in this football season and I think our kids realize that.
Obviously we're hugely disappointed by the outcome today, but we're not disappointed by our football team, or our kids or our leadership. We've the right things in place and now its just a matter of us regrouping, putting this behind us, you gotta let go of things and that's what we're going to need to do and put it behind us and take the next step forward.
