and made their first public appearance at the Tip Off Luncheon about 10 hours later. Each of the coaches had comments and here are Bill Carmody's remarks courtesy of Sportsjuice.com.
Thanks Mark and John. And thank you very much for the sponsorships here because, you know we got into this tournament here because scheduling is the worse part of coaching, as far as I'm concerned. Its getting worse and worse. We'll have a preview of Portland tomorrow morning - including notes from their coach's remarks
You know when I started coaching a few years back, a lot of years back, you mopped the floors, you did those kinds of things, coaches did everything that had to do with being on the court. Now, maybe about a third of your time you're coaching, the rest is administrative stuff and scheduling. Its impossible because everyone wants to get the edge -- we'll play you at home, we won't play you away. We'll play you on a neutral court but not into this so...
And I'm one of those guys. [Audience Laughs]
How the Wildcats wound up in the Top of the World Classic.
So, I think its late August, August 22, we still needed 3 games, but there are a lot of guys around that still needed games and we were fortunate that Mississippi State had a situation where they were going to play in some other games and they were looking for someone and we got the phone call. So we're just real fortunate to be able to come up here, get 3 games, early on in the season, and I think Jeff mentioned it, a tournament early in the year, sort of tells you where you are.
I don't need to know because about 10 days ago we played a Division III team in an exhibition game and we struggled to beat them. So I know where we are, [more laughs] but it give us 3 games.
How he plans to use the tournament games to evaluate the team.
I worked for this guy Pete Carrill for a long time at Princeton. He always said you never win and you never lose anything in November and December, and I think he's right in a way. What I'm doing, not to put words in the mouths of the other coaches, but I think we're all trying to figure out who are the "guys."
Everyone says they play 12 players, everyone's happy on their team, but usually what happens ... this is the time of the year, the first five weeks where you figure out who is the first sub - who is going in for that guy - and you get it down to maybe 8 or 9 guys. Then as the season goes along, you might even get shorter than that.
The ninth guy might be getting 3 or 4 minutes. That's what we're using it for. We want to come in here and win as many games as we can, but I want to see where we, who's going to fit in, what the combination of players are that help us win games. and you can't always tell that in practice. You have a pretty good idea, but you cannot always be quite sure, so, this will be a little bit of measuring stick for us.
I better follow suit and ask the guys on my staff to all stand in the back there.
We have sort of an international mix of players - three Croations [Vukusic, Duvancic and Tolic], two Canadians [Hachad & Cote], a Moroccan [Hachad again], a Parisian [T.J.], so, we have about 20 or 22 guys on the staff here in our traveling party and no one's ever been to Alaska, so we're going through it last night. These guys have been all over the world, and we stepped off the plane and we all realized that no one's been to this place. [Laughter]
Thanks the Tournament Volunteers
Anyway, we're really thrilled to be here - 3 games, we got in about 2 and I'd like to thank Gloria and Bob Berke. If you guys would just stand there, are they here? Like a lot of the hosts I know, they met us at about 1:30 last night at the airport and have been very attentive so I did appreciate that and George the work you've done with the volunteers here have been great.
Anyway, I'm just sort of killing time here - we practice in about 45 minutes and again, that's what I like to do, I like to get on the court and practice. I like these lunches, but not that much. [Laughter]
I want to get and see if we can shape our team. We've had one good practice in the last five - I'm sort of talking to my team right now - [more Laughs]
One, and I think they're disappointed too so, lets see, I'm a bit ornery from not getting much sleep so it should be a good practice.
Thank you very much.
