One of our team watchers, Mikero, also pays a lot of attention to recruiting and has a different take on who may not be returning, and how many might be in the 2005 recruiting class... [Our comments are in italics]
I know Adam Crumm was given a scholarship and they may have given one to Brownley, but we have had a ton of guys with eligibility leave the program since the end of last year. If they gave scholarships to the seniors like Frank Bass and Adam Paoli that won't matter next year either way. [Paoli was a member of the Class of 2001]I agree Mike -
McDole, Burdex, Wolshied, Rinker, Cibulka, Braden Jones, Jim Devine, Alexander Webb left and that is not counting a guy like Greg Lutzen who is physically unable to perform. [these guys are all accounted for in the calculations]
I also don't think LB Eric Vanderhorst and SAF Fredric Tarver will be back. [These guys are included in the numbers below]
Remember that Demaris Wilson and Adams(#23) had eligibility left and they decided not to come back or were not asked back. This was not announced on senior day. [Good point - Karl Matejka also dropped out over the winter]
I also wonder if a player is unable to play due to a career ending injury, does he count against the 85 limit? Because we have a few guys with eligibilty who may never play again due to injury.
RW makes injured players sit in the stands, yet Vince Clarke has been on the sidelines all season. I have heard he may not play again.
Slade Larshied hasn't even kicked a ball all season.
RW usually doesn't hand out scholarships to walkons at this time of year, so if they don't have one in hand already, they will have to wait until whenever some one leaves. NU always has a guy or two that decide not to come back during the spring or summer.
It is very hard to figure out the number without asking a coach, because there are so many variables. [and the coaches probably won't comment anyway]
It will be interesting to see what the total will be.
