and maybe the rest of the Wildcats tried a little too hard to make up for that as the Iowa Hawkeye's Big 3, Greg Brunner [left], Jeff Horner and Adam Haluska scored in double figures to roll up the Wildcats by 10 points.
Paced by over 50% from the arc for most of the game, those three starters scored 47 of the 64 Hawkeye points, shooting 14 of 21 from the field and hitting 9 of 15 three pointers in the game.
The Cats did start the game with an 11-2 run, the 2nd half with a 9-0 run and later did try to come back at the end but it was too little, too late.
Vedran Vukusic still led the Cats with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 Steals and 2 assists -- Tim Doyle had a flurry of baskets late and finished with 10 points, and 2 boards and a steal. Vince Scott got off to a good start, scoring 5 early, but then picked up 4 fouls and finished the night with 9 points, 3 rebounds , 3 blocks and a steal. Davor Duvancic [right] hit for 8 points and had 4 rebounds, Michael Jenkins and Mohamed Hachad each scored 7. T.J. Parker was almost shut out - he hit 1 of 4 from the field.
In the pregame, NU coach Bill Carmody stressed the fact that the Cats had to get up early, and then get out on defense to take away the 3 pointers, but the Hawkeyes got 27 points from beyond the arc - shooting 9 of 20 [45%] on the game.
BC: You said it, and we had 11 turnovers in the first half. We forced a few turnovers early in the half, and we got out a little bit -Vedran tried to throw a 3/4 court pass, picked off - Mohamed tried to do it, picked off - someone else, it seemed like they capitalized. Was the energy what you would want?
One was a 3, one was a 3 point play, and we looked tired out there.
BC: It was - Vedran was the main guy. He didn't play particulary well against Minnesota and we won, and tonight he didn't play particularly well - you saw him missing layups, missing foul shots, he was short on his foul line, you know, so usually that's a sign of fatigue - he has played a lot of minutes.Against Minnesota, Vedran didn't get off to a good start offensively, and T.J. picked up the slack. Tonight nobody else got going to replace Vukusic.
BC: It's a lot of pressure on one guy to score and we're not even talking about Mohamed and Davor who played enough - they should have an 18 point game somewhere in there too.You had a 9-0 run at the start of the half, and the Cats looked a lot crisper and really had some good offensive sets to start the second half [after the 11-0 Iowa run that ended the first]
So its hard - we're having trouble putting the ball in the basket.
BC: Yeah, it seemed we came out pretty well, and then I don't know, we seemed to die down again - the back court - we weren't getting anything out of that backcourt at all, it seemed like to me, but when we executed, went through our stuff, when we went deeper into the clock we'd get something.Another turning point was when Vince Scott picked up his 2nd foul at 7 minutes, and without Mike Thompson, that took away the Cats' inside defensive game and opened it up for Greg Brunner...
Each guy, for a while there, it seemed like they were trying to make it happen themselves - it happens often, you say OK, I'm going to get us back and we're unable to.
BC: He killed us in the first half. He had 14 or 16 points . He hit a couple of 3's, at least long shots there, I don't know if they were both 3s, and then in the pivot, Vedran went for a steal one time and he scored and another time he got it - he walked - and he got a 3 point play our of it, so we weren't able to contain him at all.Now there are two games at home next week and they're starting to become absolute must win games, starting with Texas - Corpus Christi.
BC: They're 16-6, beat Florida State at Florida State, had some other good wins. Lately, haven't been playing really high caliber compitition, but earlier in the season they've been playing good teams and beating them. And the starters will need their legs monday night.
They're not used to losing so its going to be a game and you're right, I took our guys out maybe a little bit earlier than usual, but I didn't think we had a shot.
BC: YeahAnd so its back home to face the Islanders of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at Welsh Ryan Monday night.
