and The Defense appears to have the most injury problems - Loren Howard has had an orange shirt on most of the Spring, and we've seen NU line up with 3 defensive ends at times because they just don't have the backups to put in. Then there's all the injured Linebackers, and D-Backs.The Spring Game starts at Noon - we'll be prowling the parking lot early, with our big coffee cup, looking for folks - I'll be the guy in the Purple shirt.
You know its driving Defensive coordinator Greg Colby nuts, but if anything this Spring puts the Cats in the position of playing "what-if somebody got hurt during the season" with the subs.
+ What about the D-Line backups -
We've heard a few good things about Ron Bardwell and we also want to see who is really backing up Loren Howard over on the left side.+ How good are the backup linebackers?
We might see Adam Kadela , but Eddie Simpson is reported injured now - its a big opportunity for anyone trying to impress Coach Fitz.+ Has the pass defense rush improved?
One key will be the inside battles, with Barry Cofield working against new right guard Ryan Keenan and center Trevor Rees . Cofield is one of NU's most experienced D-Lineman, and is considered the most physical player at DT in a while.+ Backup D-Backs -
I want to see just how good he is at pressuring the QB on passing downs. Now come the Fall, the left side rush should be fierce, with both Cofield and Howard coming on passing downs. Unfortunately we probably won't get to see that until Kenosha.
You hate to say this, but the injury last year to Marquice Cole probably has helped the 2005 team more than it hurt in 2004 but Cole has added some veteran experience to the pass D - He and Jeff Backes were looking pretty good until Backes hurt his shoulder again.I'm sure there are more questions to answer - you can post them on the Purple Boards and I'll see if I can get an answer...
This game is a big opportunity for Deante Battle and Cory Dious to show their stuff. I'm also looking for big [and fast] David Oredugba to get in the groove this Spring., and to see how Bryan Heinz adjusts to playing Strong Safety.
