Jeff Samardzja, a 6-foot-4, 191-pound, wide receiver from Valparaiso, Indiana will be among the top prospects in the Midwest in 2002.
Samardzija will be four-year varsity starter at the wide receiver position and a three-year varsity starter as a defensive back.
Jeff led his team to a runner-up finish in 2001. Valparaiso came up on the short end against Indianapolis (Ben Davis) and Tennessee bound quarterback, James Banks.
"I've been offered a scholarship by Purdue and today Indiana offered." Samardzija said.
"My top schools would be Purdue, Michigan, Northwestern and Notre Dame. I don't have a favorite.
I don't know about camps this summer. If I get a letter from a school that I'm interested in and they want me to come to their camp for a day, I might do that.
Samardzija reminds me a lot of Purdue's Stuart Schweigert. Both have similar builds and after I watched film on Samardzija, I pulled Schweigert's tape from my archives, watched and made comparisons.
Will the Purdue faithful have a chance to make the comparisons? Only time will tell.
"I'd like to commit early if it's the right situation. If there's a school that I like and they haven't offered before the season, I'll wait."
Samardzija had 1,197 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns in 2001. On defense he had five interceptions and three of those were returned for touchdowns.
A super three-sport athlete (basketball and baseball) with great grades (3.97 GPA), Jeff Samardzija is going to be quite a catch for a program.
