Mulroe Picks Northwestern

Coach Pat Fitzgerald and the Northwestern Wildcats picked up their first verbal commitment on Thursday when Wilmette, Ill., native Brian Mulroe pledged his commitment after a spring practice session on Thursday.

Brian Mulroe, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive lineman from Loyola Academy was receiving interest from a number of schools in the Big Ten and had made a few visits to other schools to see what they had to offer, but on Thursday he made the decision to do what he knew in his heart was inevitable and committed to Northwestern.

"I went out there on Thursday and took in an offensive line meeting and spring practice session," Mulroe stated. "After the practice I told Coach (Bret) Ingalls and Coach (Pat) Fitzgerald that I wanted to be a Wildcat. They were really excited to get me as their first commitment and hopefully this gets the ball rolling for more to come."

"When I looked at Northwestern there were a great number of things that really made the decision easy for me to make," Mulroe explained. "First of all, Northwestern plays in a great conference in the Big Ten and is one of the best academic schools in the entire nation. Coach (Pat) Fitzgerald was another big reason that I committed because I love that guy and we've had the chance to build a great relationship. He's getting the program back on its feet right now and is a Northwestern guy, so he's putting it all on the line to try and win a Big Ten Championship and I want to be there with him to do it."

As mentioned, Mulroe had been recruited by a number of different schools and had also taken visits to some other Big Ten programs. The more Mulroe looked around though, the more he kept coming back to Northwestern.

"I took some other visits, but it just made me realize more how perfect Northwestern really was for me. Now I can just focus on my senior year of football at Loyola and not have to worry about the recruiting stuff. Northwestern was my first offer which set the bar kind of high and I realized no matter who would have offered later I still would have made the same decision."

Mulroe has not decided on a major yet, but expressed an interest in approaching something along the lines of focus in business. As a junior for Loyola Academy he was a first team All-Conference and All-Area selection.
