Random Thoughts - Tewaaraton and NU - 2

One the eve of the NCAA Championships, Northwestern's Senior Star Midfielder, Hannah Nielsen is one of the 5 finalists for the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy presented by Brine.

Lets see - NCAA Champs 5 in-a-row, Tewaaraton 4?
It is hard to accept if you are an old time Lacrosse person from the East Coast, but a young lady from Adelaide, Australia is the odds on favorite to win her second, and NU's fourth consecutive Tawaaraton Trophy, Lacrosse's version of the Heisman.

This is all personal opinion, but since the Wildcat's Hannah Nielsen leads the country in points and assists, set a new single game record back in February against Duquesne, and is generally considered the top senior on the undefeated Wildcat squad, she's going to be tough to beat.

What might be her signature play was the winning score against #10 ranked Virginia earlier this season. Nielsen was, in the words of Philip Hersh of the Trib, "idling away the last four minutes."

What happened next was pure Nielsen. Virginia apparently abandoned its pressure defense to go man. Hannah Nielsen broke around the net, found the lane, and scored to ice the win for the Cats. The next weekend, she dominated the game against then #3 Penn, scoring twice and assisting in one more in the final 17 minutes of the game.

It is easy to tal;k about the Northeast domination of the sport of Lacrosse, after all it was invented by New York's Iroquois Confederacy all those years ago and until recently was a totally male, east coast thing, with the ACC taking a prominent place in Lacrosse world wide.

Credit NU Lacrosse Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller with sparking midwest interest in this "Indian" game - Tewaaraton is the Mohawk Nation's name for the game with the funny crooked stick that the French renamed "lacrosse." The Mohawks lived and played the game in upstate New York. They approve of the award and its name.

Anyway, its probably going to come down to how the finalists and their teams play in the NCAA tournament. Team leaders from Notre Dame (Julian Byers), Duke (Carolyn Davis), North Carolina (Amber Flcone) and Maryland (Caitlyn McFadden) will also be in Washington on May 28th to see if they win the Tewaaraton.

But NU wins their 5th NCAA trophy as expected, you can also expect Nielsen to be on stage about 8 PM to pick up her second copy of the trophy.

Go get 'em Hannah.
