Weekly Wildcat Watch

In this basketball-heavy edition of the Weekly Wildcat Watch, Purple Reign rounds up a few stories on Northwestern's John Shurna, who is playing right now on the U19 USA National Team in Auckland, New Zealand. In football news, a Wildcat was named to the Playboy Preseason All-America Team. Stories this week come from Sporting News and Big Ten Network, among others.

It's not that Northwestern football had an especially quiet week. No, anytime you land you first commitment from a certain position -- in this case offensive lineman Paul Jorgenson -- it's noteworthy.

But believe it or not, there was more news this week regarding Northwestern basketball, specifically about John Shurna, who is playing with the USA U19 Team in Auckland, New Zealand, at the World Championships.

Not surprisingly, the US won its first two games, against Iran and France, which guaranteed it a spot in the second round regardless of what happened against Egypt on July 4. (Team USA, by the way, celebrated its country's birthday by doubling-up Egypt, 112-55.)

Aside from those recaps, here is an article -- more of a Q&A, actually -- that the Sporting News did with Shurna. It touches on the U19 team as well as Northwestern's hoops team being on the rise.

This is an article about how NU will need more production from Shurna and Kyle Rowley. Rowley was named to the Trinidad and Tobago national team, and has been competing with them this summer.

Besides Jorgenson's commitment, the only bit of gridiron news was NU's Corey Wootton being named as a member of the Playboy Preseason All-America Team.

The holiday, coupled with the fact that we're mired in the dog days of summer, conspired to make it a pretty slow news week. But Purple Reign will keep an eye on all goings-on with NU sports, including a football commitment that PR anticipates in the next few days. Check back in...
