Johnson reneges

As reported elsewhere, three-star running back Shontrelle Johnson has decommitted from Northwestern. Purple Reign looks at who else is courting Johnson, and what the potential hole this leaves in the 2010 class.

Shontrelle Johnson, a three-star running back from Deland, Fla., has decommitted from Northwestern. Johnson was originally NU's second commit of the 2010 class, committing way back on June 17.

Rated the No. 89 running back in the nation, Johnson figured to be an integral part of the 2010 class. Another NU running back target, Marcus Murphy, a three-star prospect from DeSoto, Tex., committed to Missouri this week, so this is the second bit of bad news for NU's backfield. There are now no running backs committed, although that can certainly change.

Johnson initially chose NU over Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Memphis, which have each offered scholarships.

Northwestern would figure to be an attractive locale for an RB prospect. Freshman Arby Fields was tops among running backs in carries, yards and touchdowns last season, so the Cat coaches don't seem to have an aversion to getting youngsters carries. In addition, no back averaged more than four yards per carry, so it's not as though someone will command a boatload of carries.
