I thought it was a very winable game, I think Michigan State was doing a very good job with their team, because I think our kids can play with those guys - they're not as fast other Michigan State teams, and that's why I'm very disappointed - it wasn't lackluster, it was just sloppy. [NU Coach Bill Carmody to Dave Eanet on the WGN Postgame Show]On the road at the Breslin Center, the Northwestern Wildcats faced a pair of Michigan State Spartans who had their best games of the season. Kelvin Torbert [22 points] and Aloysius Anagonye were on fire as the Wildcats had trouble holding on to the ball.
The Ball was thrown all over the place by both sides and in the second half they tightened up and didn't turn it over and we had 20 turnovers, 10 in the first half and we duplicated that in the second half...[NU Coach Bill Carmody on the WGN Postgame show]Actually it was 18 Turnovers, but the 'Cats had trouble rebounding [only 5 offensive boards vs 13 for MSU], shooting field goals [18-40 vs 25-54 for the Spartans], and were short on the steal end too [4 vs 10 for MSU]. [Jitim Young - right - fighting for the ball, surrounded by Spartans - AP Photo/Al Goldis]The first half we should have actually gone in with the lead. We were rebounding, we had people coming off the offensive boards, and we had a couple of break situations we messed up; Mohamed [Hachad] had one ...So according to the Coach it was a game we could have won;
It seemed like we tried to push it and it wasn't there sometimes.I didn't know if we were in control, but if we didn't turn the ball over - you clearly have to credit their defense, when a team is picking you up at the top of the key, they're not putting any pressure on you the only man who's played hard is the man with the bll, you shouldn't turn the ball over.MSU took control with a couple of quick baskets after the half and that was it for the Wildcats. Coach Carmody also gave credit to MSU's Kevin Torbert;
It was always the guy - it seemed like we were trying to beat the guy with the dribble and we can't win that way.We got down in transition a little bit and Torbert had some pull-ups from the baseline there, which he does, and we know he does it, and we didn't take care of it.Jason Burke, selected as WGN's 5th 3rd Bank Hard Working Player of the Game, led the Cats in scoring with 12 [4-6, 3-4 from the arc]. He also had a rebound, 2 assists and a steal.
Jitim Young finished with 10 pts and 4 rebounds. T.J. Parker came in with 9, Mohamed Hachad and Aaron Jennings with 6 each, Winston Blake had 5 points and 6 rebounds, and Evan Seacat chipped in a 3 at the end of the game
So its back to Evanston to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Wednesday, and work on the Northwestern Game in practice - particularly executing the offense:
Bill Carmody: If this team doesn't execute
then we're nowhere.
