Big 10 Bracketology - II

The loss last night didn't change Northwestern's position in the Big 10 Tournament - we're going to be the #10 seed.

But the Illini's loss to Wisconsin makes Saturday's games very important to at least 5 teams...

OK, Now we can play "what if" with a more complete bracket...

With the games last night officially on the standings, The Wisconsin Badgers have won the Big 10 outright.

There are still 3 ties in the standings for seed 2, 4 and 6.

Seed 2:
holds the tiebreaker over Michigan having beaten the Wolverines twice. The Illini have a game with Minnesota a loss by Illinois would drop them to 3rd.
Michigan takes on Purdue. If Purdue wins, they would be tied for 3rd with Michigan. Should Illinois also lose, there would be a three way tie for the #2 - Illinois and Purdue split, and Michigan has one win on Purdue.

So - given an Illinois loss and a Michigan loss to Purdue it looks like Purdue would win the seed since they have the best record against Wisconsin. The Illini have control of this thing - all they have to do is beat Minnesota.

Seed 4:
, if they lose have to have help from the Buckeyes. Right now they hold the first tie-breaker over MSU, but Spartan win vaults them over Purdue into 4th if Purdue loses.

Seed 6:
gets to play Penn State at home. They should be able to win this one easily. Minnesota, however, is entertaining Illinois at home [see above]. Given everyone's away record, nothing is set in concrete.

Regardless of who wins at Iowa, Northwestern draws the #7 Seed in Thursday's game. If Indiana wins and Minnesota loses, NU gets to play Minnesota. Minny beats the Illini and Indiana wins, NU plays Minnesota. Minny wins, Indy loses, and its the Hoosiers on Thursday.

So here is the tournament seeding chart, as of Thursday morning:

Thursday 3/13
Friday 3/14
Saturday 3/15
Sunday 3/16

#1 - Wisconsin

#8 - OSU
Game 4
Winner Game 4
Game 1
Winner Game 1

#9 - Iowa
Game 8

#4 - Purdue

Game 5
Winner Game 5 Winner Game 8

#5 - MSU

Championship Game

#2 - Illinois

Game 6

Game 2
Winner Game 2

#10 - NU
Game 9

#3 - Michigan

#6 - Indiana
Game 7
Winner Game 7
Game 3
Winner Game 3

#11 - Penn State

If I bet on such things, I expect that Game 2 will come out exactly like it shows. That means to win the Big 10, we have to get past Minnesota, Illinois, and then the winner of Michigan/Indiana.
Unless Penn State pulls an upset Thursday night....
