Purple Reign Pregame Intel Report

NU coach Bill Carmody is on record about how the Wildcats play against the zone...sometimes its not very pretty

But over in Iowa City, the Hawkeye's inablilty to solve the zone is leading to speculation that Iowa just might be in danger of losing their Senior Day game too.

Wednesday night, Iowa fell victim to a collapsing zone that was compounded by the Hawk's inability to sink outside shots. Michigan State went on a 16-0 run to start the game and never looked back.
The key was that collapsing zone - something that bothers the Hawks when they can't get their game inside the arc.
We expected a zone, and we prepared for it. We just didn't execute." [Chauncey Leslie, In the Daily Iowan]
Against MSU the Hawks shot a dismal 20% from the floor in the first half, they improved to 50% in the second, but it wasn't enouth.

Other than the problems with the zone, there isn't much being said about today's game except;
It's their last game in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It's their last memory. It's also our last memory of this year. We'll definitely be ready to play. [Jared Reiner - Hawk Central]
That's right, its Senior Day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Guards Chauncey Leslie [left] and Josh Kimm will be the honorees. Another Senior from Iowa, Northwestern's Center Aaron Jennings will also be playing his last regular season game, not to mention Forwards Winston Blake and Jason Burke.
The Last Time
Was in Evanston as the Wildcats came down on the short end of the scoreboard -
Iowa 68 NU 63.

The game was won on a 23-9 Iowa run to open the 2nd half. The Cats also had a 10-0 run to close the gap, but all told, couldn't contain Jared Reiner, who pulled down 16 rebounds and scored 6. Four Hawks, Worley, Leslie, Horner and Boyd wound up in double figures.

The Big Gun [s]
#1 6-0 Senior Guard Chauncey Leslie with a 14.4 scoring average in Big 10 play is the scoring leader but he shoots slightly over 45% from the floor, and only .270 from the arc. He's also the team leader in assists.

#5 6-11 Junior Center Jared Reiner [right] is the man off the boards - averaging 8 rebounds a game in Big 10 play. 2/3 of his boards are off the defensive end for the Hawkeyes.

From the Arc: #4 Junior Forward Glen Worley has the best average - [8-20] 40%. But Brady Boyd takes the most attempts - he's 26-88 - a 29.5% average. #2 Guard Jeff Horner will also try 3s.

The Starters
#1 Chauncey Leslie [6-0 Sr, 14.2 ppg/4.4 rpg]
#2 Jeff Horner [6-3 Fr, 8.5/4.7]
#11 Boyd Brody [5-11 Jr, 10.2/2.1]

#5 Jared Reiner [6-11 Jr, 10.7/8.0]

# 11 Sean Sonderleiter [6-9 Jr, 8.9/3.7]

Iowa's Starters average 52.5 points a game, the team averages 68.5 ppg.

Guards Leslie and Horner have started all 15 Big 10 games for Steve Alford's Hawks. Because its Senior Day, you might see #0 Josh Kimm get a start
The Rest of the Team
Two players have also played in all 15 Big 10 Games -
# 4 6-7 Junior Forward Glen Worley [right -27.6 mins 11.3 ppg/5.9 rpg] had started 10 games.
#44 6-7 Frosh Forward Greg Brunner [22.5 mins 6.1 ppg/4.3 rpg] has started 7 games.

#30 6-5 Junior Forward Kurt Spurgeon, #0 6-1 Senior Guard Josh Kimm, and #20 Chris Warren also have come off the bench for the Hawks
The Coach
The Hawkeye's Head Basketball coach is Steve Alford [left], now in his 4th year.

He holds the highest winning percentage in the Big 10 Tournament [8-2]. His Hawks have played in both the NCAA [2001] and the NIT [2002]

A native of Indiana, he was that state's Mr. Basketball before leading the Hoosiers to both Big 10 and NCAA championships. When Bobby Knight left Indiana, there was a lot of speculation that he would return to Bloomington, but so far he's resisted returning to his home state so far and has a contract to coach Iowa throught 2009

Challenges for the Cats
 • Once again there's a senior star playing his last home game - Chauncey Leslie. The Cats have to keep him outside where his shooting numbers are suspect.
 • Aaron Jennings has to play his usual high intensity game against Iowa. He always turns it up a notch against the Hawks.
 • The Cats have to play a collapsing zone against Iowa and force them to shoot from outside, where they're shooting under 27%

There is Limited TV

ESPN Plus, but there is a long list of stations carrying the game - WCIU in Chicago is one of them - here's a link to the rest

Of course there's WGN 720AM and WGNRadio.com - Dave Eanet [Mr Wildcat] and Bob Hildebrand will have the call.

Game time is 1:30 PM Central.
