IrishEyes' in-game observations of today's third quarter vs. the Cardinal.

In-game observations of today's 3rd Quarter between the Cardinal and the Irish:

  • Pre-snap confusion in the secondary on the second play of the half sets up another completion to the tight end and a 3rd and 1…one play later, Harrison Smith saves a 54-yard touchdown with an ankle tackle, but the eighth first down by the Cardinal in 10 third-down opportunities.
  • 20 yards on a simple underneath cross for another first down. The answer to this question is a definitive NO.
  • Irish safeties and ‘backers continue to be abused by the Cardinal tight end tandem of Fleener and Reuland.
  • Excellent zone discipline showed by Walls on a corner-route behind him, breaking up a sure touchdown to Owusu.
  • Brian Smith breaks up a touchdown to Reuland on a terribly ill-advised scramble and throwback over the middle by Andrew Luck. Nice effort by Smith who struggled mightily in the opening half.
  • Another field goal by former Irish kicker Nate Whitaker: Stanford 19 Notre Dame 6

  • Set to receive the kick-off, Notre Dame could not have possibly played worse, yet trail by just 13 points with 10:44 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.

  • Brian Kelly should consider giving Armando Allen the ball more…he and Floyd are the only Irish offensive players that have stepped up to the Cardinal challenge today.
  • Kyle Rudolph is having an uncharacteristically awful game.
  • If Allen's peripheral vision and balance matched his heart he'd be a star
  • Looked like a terrible throw to Floyd but it was apparently tipped at the line of scrimmage
  • A three-man rush sacks Crist to force an Irish punt…Crist held the ball way too long with Tyler Eifert breaking open down the seam early.

  • Ben Turk sums up the Irish afternoon with a pitiful (running) punt of 17 yards, giving the Cardinal the ball at their own 34-yard line. Stanford 19 ND 6 and the Irish defense most hold to give Brian Kelly's underachieving, impotent offense a prayer over the final 20+ minutes.

  • Te'o with two nice plays: first holding up to avoid a 15-yard penalty with Andrew Luck speeding to the sideline, then a tackle at the line of scrimmage on the following play.
  • Darrin Walls makes a fantastic reaction interception off a Kerry Neal tip to give the Irish new life, setting up 1st and 10 at their own 44-yard line with 6:20 remaining. The Irish needed it, and made their own break. The score remains Stanford 19 ND 6

  • Stanford's mixture of delayed blitzes and dropping eight in coverage has thoroughly confused Crist and the Irish offense through the first 29 game minutes. The Irish go three-and-out on three straight incomplete passes
  • Wow. Manti Te'o with a brutal sideline hit…after a 9-yard gain
  • Big play by Fleming on the edge to force a 2nd and 13 with 2:31 remaining from the Irish 40-yard line.
  • Nice coverage in the flat by Calabrese sets up a key 3rd and 13…Te'o with a huge stop on a power sweep to the left. Brian Smith secured the edge (was blocked) but that's quality team defense.
  • Stanford covers a (non-running) punt at the Irish 1-yard line. Former Irish special teams coach Brian Polian seems to have found his mojo on the West Coast…

  • Allen injured on the following snap… when it rains it pours.
  • If a facemask is grabbed in the woods, and no ref notices, is it illegal?
