Stanford 10 ND 3
Key Personnel: LT Zack Martin; LG Chris Stewart; C Braxston Cave; RG Trevor Robinson; RT Taylor Dever; TE Kyle Rudolph; TB Armando Allen; WRs Michael Floyd and Theo Riddick are later joined by John Goodman, then Tai-ler Jones; QB Dayne Crist.
2nd Quarter Running Game Notes
The Irish passed on six consecutive plays to start the quarter, earning 23 yards and a field goal to cut the Cardinal lead to 10-6
Junior Jonas Gray gains 10 on his first carry, but a slow-developing play is limited to one yard on his next carry. A poor effort by right guard Trevor Robinson killed the play; Robinson had played quite well in the 1st Quarter…Riddick had broken open down the seam on Crist's 3rd down bounce pass to the far side.
The Irish ran just five times for 14 yards in the 2nd Quarter.
2nd Quarter Passing Game Notes
Receiving good protection by both guards and center Braxston Cave vs. delayed Cardinal blitzes, Crist hits Riddick on a shallow cross (right to left) that turns into a 14-yard gain…Crist follows with a left side hitch to Floyd, who snags the pass at 6 yards then searches for three more with a burst inside toward the defense…Crist continues a nice rhythm (8 consecutive completions) hitting Goodman on a quick out to the right side. Goodman lined up in a triple-stack formation, staggered behind Riddick and Floyd…Riddick short-arms a quick out to the left side, wary of the presence Shayne Skov has an influence on the play…
Crist airmails a deep route wide and out of bounds to Floyd toward the right pylon vs. solo coverage. Fine blocking up front by the Irish to provide Crist with a perfect pocket, including a textbook cut block by Taylor Dever on the right side…On 3rd and 10 from the Stanford 23-yard line, Crist hits Floyd on a far side out by Floyd drops the catchable ball thanks to a well-timed hit. LT Zack Martin is called for holding, regardless…Ruffer nails his 12th consecutive field goal (7-7 this year) to cut the lead to 10-6
Trailing 13-6 with just over three minutes remaining, Crist loses a yard on 2nd and 10 as the O-Line's previously solid pass protection is exposed by the delayed blitzes of the Cardinal linebackers…Riddick had broken open down the seam on Crist's 3rd down bounce pass to the far side (intended for Floyd) forcing an Irish punt.
After an interception by Jamoris Slaughter (on a fine deflection courtesy of Robert Blanton), the Irish gain 0 on an inside handoff to Allen, throw short and incomplete (dropped) to Rudolph, then are limited to three yards on another Allen draw. The misguided possession and ensuing punt affords the Cardinal the pigskin at midfield with 0:34 remaining. Two completions totaling 24 yards and one Andrew Luck scramble later, the Cardinal tack on a field goal for a 10-point edge heading into the break.
Poor clock management by head coach Brian Kelly cost the Irish three points in the final 1:21.
MiscellaneousLongest rush of the season (11 yards) for junior Jonas Gray, but Gray is unlikely to play this week in Chestnut Hill due to a groin injury…Notre Dame's final two possession gained 14 yards on six plays with two punts…I have no idea what Kelly was looking for from that final, futile possession…Notre Dame turned just two of seven 3rd down opportunities into first downs (the Cardinal were 7-7).
