Five Questions - Western Michigan

Our weekly five questions feature turns its focus to the Broncos from Western Michigan.

Will the Irish look over Western Michigan this weekend and towards their game against Navy next week?

While some may be thinking this question is a little crazy.  Keep the following in mind.  Navy is not your everyday offense to prepare for and after last season's 23-21 loss, the Irish could be looking just a little ahead in their prep for the academy team.

Will Brian Kelly continue his mastery over Bill Cubit?

During his three years at Central Michigan, Brian Kelly went 2-1 over Bill Cubit's Western Michigan teams.  In fact, Kelly is the only coach to have beaten the same team twice in one season as head coach of two different teams.  During the 2006 season, Kelly's Central Michigan team beat Cubit 31-7 during the regular season.  Eight weeks later Kelly was the new coach at Cincinnati and in charge of the Bearcats during their trip to the International Bowl.  Kelly's Bearcats won 27-24 giving him the double dip against one team as head coach of two different programs in the same season.  While Kelly has never said anything public, talk has always been the two coaches do not get along very well.

Who will be the "Next Man In" for Notre Dame this week?

Brian Kelly has always been a man who believes in the "Next Man In" and Saturday he will get a chance to show why as Kyle Rudolph is out for the season and Armando Allen being a game time decision?

Will Notre Dame look to run the football more against Western Michigan?

The Broncos are giving up an average of 168 yards rushing per game.  Irish fans have been asking for more of a running attack, and the Broncos would be the right team to do it against.  Knowing Brian Kelly the way I do, do not be surprised if the Irish continue their passing ways.

Who will have a better day at quarterback?  Dayne Crist or Alex Carder?

Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder has some of the tools Brian Kelly looks for in his quarterbacks.  Here are both quarterbacks' numbers.  Carder stats are from only five games while Crist has played six so far.

Alex Carder:  125-208-78 / 60.1% / 1,290 yards / 10 TD / Avg/G 258.0 / Effic 121.3

Dayne Crist:  137-233-4 / 58.8% / 1,600 yards / 11 TD / Avg/G 266.7 / Effic 128.6 Top Stories
