Perkins Has Two... Looking for More

Notre Dame hasn't recruited a lot of players from the South Bend area in the past, but after signing Daniel Smith from Clay High School in 2010, Washington High school junior running back David Perkins could be the next in line.

David Perkins (6-foot-2, 210-pounds) is a dynamic athlete with or without the ball in his hands. The running back has scholarship offers from Toledo and Ohio University, but that number should climb fairly soon based on the list of schools that are filling his mailbox with recruiting material.

"I hear a lot from Northwestern," Perkins said. "I'm getting mail from Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Nebraska, Alabama, Syracuse, Ball State, Indiana, Illinois, Pitt, Toledo, Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Bowling Green."

"They (Notre Dame) requested transcripts and have been sending me letters. I went to one of their practices at the beginning of the season. I went to the Stanford game and the Pittsburgh game and I'm going to be at the Utah game."

Despite having a local advantage and a head coach that played at Notre Dame (Antwon Jones '96-'99), Perkins has developed a strong relationship with a school in the Big East.

"Out of all of the schools recruiting me, I like Syracuse the most right now," Perkins said. "I like coach (Tyrone) Wheatley...I love that dude. He's real cool. I want to go see what the facilities are like. They're talking to me like I have an offer, but I don't have one. They talk about it a lot though.

"It's still really early in the recruiting process though. I'm only a junior, so you don't know how things are going to play out, but right now I like them a lot."

Perkins is hoping to still make it to Syracuse for a game this fall, as well as Michigan and Toledo. After that he'll start formulating his list of schools that fit his criteria.

"There are things that I'm looking for in schools," he said. "The coaches and what they're like is probably at the top of the list. I want to look at the situation with their positions. I want to see if they have seniors or sophomores in the position I want to play. Location is important, the campus and what the people are like, and the academics.

"I want to play running back at the next level, but a lot of teams are recruiting me as an athlete. A lot of school likes me at outside linebacker. I lead Class 4A in sacks. I have 11 sacks and I have 17 tackles for loss. I'm doing pretty good at outside linebacker." Top Stories
