Irish Eyes' Take: Cam McDaniel

A three-game winning streak and a prospect working for an offer brings us to our latest edition of "Irish Eyes Take" and a look at new Notre Dame verbal pledge Cam McDaniel.

Monday brought news of a new verbal pledge to Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish. Cam McDaniel (Coppell, Texas) picked up an offer mid-morning, and left no time to waste in giving his verbal pledge. At 5-foot-10, 190-pounds, McDaniel will need to add some weight to his frame; however, he is a tough physical player and one Brian Kelly feel in love with over the past several weeks.

What To Like

Just watch his highlights and you see a player who will come in and understand the offensive attack the Irish run. Tough, hardnosed, old school, those are just some of the words that describe the way McDaniel plays the game.

The ability to play running back, wide receiver, or even defensive back, makes McDaniel a safe prospect to recruit. On the field, he shows great balance and cutting ability to go with soft hands and a quick burst.

What May Concern You

Some are being quick to compare McDaniel to another Texas hotshot running back Sam McGuffie. However, if you go back and compare the two player's highlights you will see a difference in both.

McDaniel Leaps Defender
McDaniel is seen taking on defenders and busting tackles while McGuffie is running around most of them or looking to jump defenders. Will need to add some body weight to continue to play at the level he has shown in high school.

Bottom Line

This is a very solid and good player for the Irish to get in on. He should become a solid back capable of running the ball; however, his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield will be the biggest asset he will bring to the offense early in his career.

The ability to play him at multiple positions is a major bonus and one Brian Kelly is sure to look at. While we are quick to look at the offensive threat he could become, his ability to be a factor in the return game is a major bonus.

On film, McDaniel shows no fear returning kicks. This will be an area Cam McDaniel might find to his liking for early playing time. Top Stories
