Decker Talks Irish

Ohio Class of 2012 offensive lineman Taylor Decker gives the latest on his recruiting.

While Notre Dame has not offered him a scholarship, the interest between Taylor Decker of Vandalia (Ohio) Butler and the Irish seems to be mutual. The 6-foot-8, 275-pound offensive tackle tells Irish Eyes the latest.

"Notre Dame's Coach (Tim) Hinton has stopped in and watched me practice," Decker said on Sunday night. "He stopped in about two weeks ago and they are hoping I can come up for their Junior Day."

One thing that might stop Decker from any visits is basketball. Right now with his team sitting at 5-1, Decker knows his commitment to his coach and teammates come before any trips.

"I've been invited to some things, however, basketball comes before that right now."

With only one offer on the table (Cincinnati), Decker has seen several programs stop into school the past few weeks.

"Virginia is the latest school to stop and show interest. Northwestern invited me to a bowl practice but I was unable to attend. There seems to be many coaches stopping in and I hope to get to some Junior Days when I can."

As for what other programs are saying, Taylor is hearing a lot of the same news.

"Some of these schools want to see my play basketball so they can see my athleticism. They have all seen my game film and want a chance to judge me as they all see me as a pure tackle. Each of them has spoke about offering me from that as well as my game film."

One thing some worried about Decker when he first appeared on the recruiting scene was his weight. This now looks to be less of an issue as Decker continues to fill out his frame.

"I'm at 275-pounds right now and have not loss any weight since basketball started. In fact, I have gained about three pounds since basketball."

Having visited Notre Dame during the season opened the Ohio products eyes about the Irish.

"Right now Notre Dame is my top school. If they would offer, I would have to sit down and talk with my parents and high school coach. Notre Dame is the type of program I could see myself giving an early commitment to. Of all the schools I have seen, I have been the most impressed with Notre Dame and everything they do on and off the field."

Taylor Decker understands it is early in the recruiting process and is not too worried about when he will pick up his next offer. Irish fans should be excited as Decker has the Irish at the top of his list and the Irish look to be close to giving this true spread tackle an offer. Top Stories
