Hardy Takes Different Path

Secondary help is on its way. Notre Dame will lose three quarters of its starting secondary in 2012, so it is important that the Irish restock the depth chart with the 2011 recruiting class. Eilar Hardy from Pickerington High School (Ohio) is one of five defensive backs that the Irish hope to sign on Wednesday.

There always seems to be a few surprises on signing day for every school, but cornerback Eilar Hardy won't be creating any drama himself when he sign his letter of intent on Wednesday.

"I'm definitely signing with Notre Dame," hardy said. "It's a beautiful campus. Everything about it is so prestigious that it's too hard for me to pass up. You can't go wrong with going to Notre Dame, you just can't."

Notre Dame wasn't the logical choice for Hardy a year ago. In fact, if you ask the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Hardy, he'd tell you that Notre Dame wasn't on his radar at this time last year.

"They definitely weren't," Hardy said. "It definitely wasn't my comfort zone. It wasn't something that I was used to.

"I went up there on a visit with my parents and it just wasn't me. My parents wanted me to take another visit, so I did that. When I went back, i had a chance to hang out with the guys (players) and I guess at some point, I just felt it wasn't an opportunity that I could pass up. It was something that I had to do.

"My parents told me to look outside of football, to look at the degree you get when you graduate," Eilar explained. "They talked about how much a degree from Notre Dame would help me out in the long run.

"So I sat down by myself and went through everything and in the end I just decided that Notre Dame was the best place for me. I'd get a great education, a great degree and be able to prepare myself to be successful outside of football. I had to make a 40-year decision."
