Kelly makes impression on McMullen

Greg McMullen is one of the top defensive line prospects in Ohio and the Irish are going make a push to land his signature. The standout athlete from Archbishop Hoban High School (Akron, Ohio) just landed a scholarship offer from the Irish over the weekend.

Greg McMullen (6-foot-5, 260-pounds) had heard good things about Notre Dame, but he wanted to get an opportunity to see the campus for himself, so this weekend he made the trip over to South Bend for the Irish junior day.

"It's hard to explain," McMullen said of his visit to Notre Dame. "It was different, but a good different. It went very well. I met a lot of wonderful people, I saw the campus and the fact that Brian Kelly offered me. Not everyone gets offered to go to a prestigious school like Notre Dame.

"I talked to coach Kelly for about 15 minutes. He knew what he was talking about. He was energetic and he was in tune… and he said a lot of great things."

Throughout the day McMullen had an opportunity to speak with most of the Notre Dame staff and he obviously made a strong impression on everyone.

"(Kelly) said that he got nothing but great feedback on me. He said that he saw my film and that I looked great. Besides that, he said, ‘We recruit people with the personality and maturity that you have.' He said that was another reason that they offered."

Notre Dame joins Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue Nebraska, and Tennessee on McMullen's offer sheet. While he's going to take his time and look around during the recruiting process, it will be tough to beat the in-state Buckeyes.

"It seems like a lot of Ohio boys feel that they're predestined to go to Ohio State," McMullen explained. "They think that because they're from Ohio that they have to go to Ohio State.

"That's not the case for me. I'm going to make sure I have a full recruiting process, so I know what the best school is the best fit for me. With that being said, Ohio State is obviously going to have the upper hand, because I am an Ohio boy and that's where my family is from.

"I think personally, it will come down to whether I'm comfortable there, and if the defense fits me. When I went there (Notre Dame) it was comfortable, but I have a year to make my decision so anything can happen between now and them." Top Stories
