Dieter hoping Irish step up

Gehrig Dieter has been on the Notre Dame campus fairly frequently, but he wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to get another look. The wide receiver from Washington High School (South Bend, Ind.) was one of the prospects on hand for Notre Dame's junior day on Saturday.

Gehrig Dieter (6-foot-3, 210-pounds) has been on the Notre Dame campus enough that he probably could have led the tours during Notre Dame's junior day. That didn't happen, but Dieter did get a chance to speak with Notre Dame's head coach while he was there.

"Coach Kelly said that they weren't going to offer me right now," Dieter explained. "They're interested, but they want to see me more in person.

"Coach Kelly told me that he's going to come to one of my track meets to watch me compete. I'll probably come to their summer camps and the team 7-on-7 and show them what I have.

"They said that they liked me at wide receiver," he explained. "My coach was there and he asked them what position they were recruiting me as and they told him as a receiver."

Dieter has scholarship offers from Northern Illinois, Bowling Green and Western Michigan. He's also seeing interest from Purdue, Northwestern, Michigan State, Indiana, and Cincinnati. He isn't in a rush to get his decision out of the way, but don't expect him to drag on his recruitment.

"I kind of want to have a decision done sooner rather than late," he said. "Hopefully I'll have all the offers that I want by the end of summer. If not, hopefully I'll have my decision done before the end of my football season.

"I'm going to graduate early so I can enroll early and get to school for spring practice."

As a junior, Dieter had 48 catches for 989 yards and 11 touchdowns.
