Irish earn No. 2 seed

Mike Brey, Ben Hansbrough and the 26-6 Fighting Irish will take on the Akron Zips in first-round action on Friday.

Notre Dame capped off the program's best regular season in three decades with its requisite semi-finals heart-breaker in the Big East Conference Tournament (Mike Brey's program has suffered three such narrow semi-finals losses in the last five seasons).

The Irish will attempt to rebound and embark on a deep 2011 NCAA Tournament run on Friday, March 11 vs. Akron (23-12), tournament champions of the MAC conference.

Notre Dame's second place Big East finish earned the school a No. 2 seed in the Southwest region. The remaining top four teams in the Southwest are No. 1 Kansas, No. 3 Purdue, and No. 4 Louisville, who took out the Irish in the conference semi-finals on Friday.

Notable foes filling out the Southwest region include Illinois, UNLV, Big East member Georgetown, and Notre Dame's potential second round foes, Texas A&M and Florida State.

The Irish and Zips will square off in Chicago on Friday. Tip-off is set for 1:40 EST. Top Stories
