Herron surprised by Irish

Notre Dame has yet to offer DeAndre Herron, but the 6-foot-6, 310-pound offensive lineman from Avon, Ind., was impressed after his recent visit.

Irish Eyes first watched DeAndre Herron during performance at the "Best of the Midwest" High School Showcase. Now, the Avon (In) product has picked up a few offers and the interest of several programs including Notre Dame.

"I cannot complain about Notre Dame as it is a really good school. I never fully understood how great a school it was until I visited there this past Saturday."

For Herron, the recruiting process has gone from a snail's pace to one with several programs having high interest. Who is him main recruiter for the Irish?

"Coach Elston is the coach recruiting me for Notre Dame. He told me they are really interested in me and would like for me to attend a one-day camp this summer, which I will be doing. He also said they would be basing their recruiting interest on how I do on my test scores."

Impressed by his overall visit, Herron remembered several things from his recent visit.

"Practice was fast-paced and what stood out the most was the use of cameras attached to the quarterbacks. I also noticed their offensive line was not that big, however, there were really good. Notre Dame has a lot of great tradition and I loved their weight room. This was the first time I have ever visited Notre Dame, and I have family that lives in South Bend."

As for a return visit, it could happen very soon.

"I am going to contact them again next week about visiting again for a practice of the spring game. We'll have to wait and see."
