The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Davis already liked Notre Dame, and he is showing it with the release of his top schools.
"My top 5 are California, Nebraska, Notre Dame, BYU and Utah," Hinds said. "I plan on visiting Notre Dame for one of my official visits after football season is over. That's when I will take all of my official visits."
Dates for his visits are yet to be established.
Hinds, who is rated as Scout.com's No. 10 defensive end in the class, is coming off a junior season in which he made 58 tackles and had 7½ sacks. He divulged a few of the characteristics he wants in a program.
"A quality education, top notch football program," he said.
Hinds also knows plenty about this Irish since his father is a Notre Dame fan. A visit to campus would allow Troy to experience the history and tradition of the program, as well as get a better feel for the coaching staff, the players and academics.
It is a combination of those things that has Hinds giving the Irish a hard look.
"I like the education opportunities and I really like the storied football program, and what it would mean playing for Notre Dame," Hinds said. "The national exposure would be really cool."
Two months ago, Hinds' plan was to wait until after his senior season to take visits and make a decision.
But with so many players decided early, and programs filling their scholarship slots, is it forcing Hinds to alter his schedule?
"I want to make my decision after the season," he said, "so I can take the opportunity to take my official visits and see the schools up close and in person."
