Will troubles in Chapel Hill help Irish?

Could Notre Dame see any help from the fallout at North Carolina? We look at the Tar Heels' committed prospects and a few top targets to see if there are players at which the Irish could make a recruiting pitch.

Butch Davis is out as head coach at North Carolina and there is sure to be some fallout.

Is Notre Dame in position with any of the Tar Heels pledges or top prospects to make a run? We look at a few names.

The Pledges

Justin Meredith – TE – Anderson (SC) T L Hanna High School

Meredith held offers from Notre Dame, Auburn, Florida and LSU to name a few. At 6-foot-5, 218-pounds, Meredith is a flex receiving tight end Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly likes to recruit. However, when Meredith made his college decision known, the Irish did not make his final five. Look for those four remaining schools (Auburn, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and LSU) to get the best shot of getting his pledge if he makes a change.

Shakeel Rashad – OLB – Jacksonville (FL) Episcopal High School

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Rashad listed the Irish as a school of interest but never earned an offer. Right now the Irish are working hard and it would be surprising to see a push for the Florida native.

Jon Heck – OT – Jacksonville (FL) The Bolles School

The Irish legacy would love to add his name to the Irish list of pledges. However, there was never an offer made to the son of former Notre Dame first-team All-American Andy Heck. Could the Irish take a second look if Andrus Peat, Zach Banner or Ronnie Stanley chooses not to be Irish? That will be a question to keep an eye on in the coming months.

On The Board

Keith Marshall – RB – Raleigh (ND) Millbrook High School

One of the Irish top targets for 2012 is Marshall, who told IrishEyes.com in May he was planning to make an official visit to South Bend, Ind., in the fall. At the time, Marshall listed North Carolina as one of twelve programs he still had interest in looking at.

If the Irish can get Marshall in for an official visit it will help their chances. Issues at North Carolina help some but there are still some major programs battling for Marshall.

Jarron Jones – DT – Rochester (NY) Aquinas Institute

Jones was a pledge to Penn State but opened up his recruitment, making him one of the hottest prospects on the East Coast. While the Irish look to be in the race so do a lot of other programs. North Carolina had offered and it may not really matter what has happened in the Tar Heels program when all is said and done.

Sheldon Day – DT – Indianapolis (IN) Warren Central

Day had ties to the Tar Heels program as former teammate Kiaro Holts signed with UNC in the 2011 class. Day visited several programs to date and many feel Notre Dame could be at the top of the list.

Nevertheless, with a former teammate in a program, anything is possible and the Heels could have used the help. Now, look for Day to steer away from a program in disarray.

If things start to fall apart at Carolina there could be some positives for the Irish. We'll be checking to see if there are any names the Irish may be looking at going after in the coming days.
