Van Still Interested in Irish

<P>Rodney Van hails from Long Beach Poly high school. The storied program usually produces five to six division I prospects a year and Van will be one of the best this year. The 6-1, 175-pound corner prospect is listed with 4.4 speed and has two offers so far. The Irish also appear very interested in this top prospect.

Rodney Van had a solid junior season last year. He recorded 48 solo tackles, 17 assists, and two interceptions on the year. UCLA and Utah have already offered this top prospect.

"I've received two calls so far," said Van. "Notre Dame and Colorado have called me so far. I'm getting letters from schools all across the country right now."

The corner prospect knows what is important to him when he makes a decision. "The atmopshere will be important to me. I want to get that feeling of home or being comfortable. I also want to continue running track. I don't want someone to tell me I can run track and then tell me I can't when I get there. I run the 200, 400 and long jump. My best 200 time is 21.7, my best 400 is 48.2 and my best long just is 23'2" so far."

Van plans to take all of his visits and distance won't be a problem afterall. "I will take all my visits. I thought distance might be a problem but I've talked to my family and they want me to go anywhere I want to go. They told me they would make sure they got out there to see me play. I thought that distance might be a problem but my family says it's fine with them."

Van has a 2.5 core GPA right now and scored an 800 on his first attempt on the SAT. He recently took the SAT again and is waiting on his score. He said he was taking a few of his core classes over again.

The Long Beach native does have a top five at this point. "Right now it would be UCLA, Notre Dame, Florida State, Miami and Texas."

Notre Dame is one of his top choices right now. "I have a high level of interest in Notre Dame. I'm very interested but I want to take my visits before I make a decision. It's a small school and I like that small school atmosphere. You get better attention from your teachers there and I think that is why their graduation rate is so high. I also like coach Willingham. I wanted to go to Stanford because he was there and now he is at Notre Dame. I want to take all my visits before I make a decision though."

Comments. It appears he has a strong interest in Notre Dame right now. He will need to improve his SAT score and his core might need to be improved. He said he was taking some classes over so that will help. A very nice kid who would fit in well at Notre Dame. Top Stories
