4-star RB Mahone Picks Irish

Notre Dame added what it hopes will be the first of at least two running backs in the 2012 class when Fitch High (Youngstown, Ohio) four-star William Mahone announced Friday night he committed to the Irish.

It took a while, but Notre Dame has a running back in its 2012 class.

Fitch High four-star running back William Mahone, a 6-foot, 205-pounder, announced following his game moments ago he is committed to Notre Dame.

Mahone chose the Irish over Pittsburgh. He also had Michigan State and Penn State in his final four, but those schools were recently dropped from consideration.

"Some may question his timed speed, but his game speed is there and he may end up as the top back in the state," Scout.com Midwest Regional Manager Allen Treiu said in his evaluation of Mahone. "He's closer to that title than many think. I really believe he'll be a top flight college back.

"He's compact, can run inside and outside, and regardless of what he times at, has shown he can break long runs as well as be an effective return man."

Mahone, who is the 10th-rated running back in Scout.com's 2012 class, made the decision after making an official visit to Notre Dame for the Sept. 17 game against Michigan State.
