IE Quick Take: William Mahone

Youngstown (Ohio) product William Mahone added his name to the growing list of committed players for Notre Dame's class of 2012.'s Dave Berk offers his first take on verbal commitment No. 16 for Brian Kelly.

Friday night was a big night for William Mahone as the Youngstown (Ohio) Fitch running back gave his verbal pledge to Notre Dame.

Here is our first quick take on the newest member of the Irish class of 2012.

When looking at Mahone the first thing to standout is his physical size at 6-foot-0, 205-pounds. In Paul Longo's strength program, Mahone will be able to add more weight and strength and be capable of being a solid back in Brian Kelly's spread offense.

The biggest concern when looking at Mahone is his speed. Many have questioned his forty time, however, on film and in person, Mahone has shown the ability to break off long gains. The other concern will always be the pull of his high school teammates towards Pittsburgh.

Capable of playing on either side of the ball makes Mahone a top talent and safe recruit for the Irish. The one thing many do not talk about is the lack of carries on his body; this can prove big down the road as some top high school backs have issues with shoulders, knees or ankles. Mahone runs hard and shows great acceleration and balance. While many runs are between the tackles, he has shown the ability to cut back for big gains. Top Stories
