When then-Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly moved to Notre Dame after the 2009 season, Hinton came with him and continued to recruit Pittman.
That long-standing relationship and a promise Pittman made two years ago to Hinton is the reason the Florida commit from North Marion High (Citra, Fla.) is heading to Notre Dame on an official visit this weekend to watch the Irish play Navy.
"Basically, they've been asking me to come up and check out the campus," Pittman said. "I've known coach Hinton for three or four years, basically when he was at Cincinnati. I got an offer from coach Hinton as a freshman.
"We've been talking and he brought up a visit. (Notre Dame) was pushing and pushing for me to just come up and to see the place. I promised him before I committed I would come on a visit, but I committed early."
In fact, Pittman committed to Florida 14 months ago, but it hasn't stopped other programs from recruiting the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Pittman.
So, why is he taking a trip to Notre Dame?
"I want to see the campus," Pittman said. "I've never been out of state and I just want to see the program and the atmosphere."
Pittman has 13 catches for 247 yards and six touchdowns, and has made 18 tackles and intercepted two passes as a defensive back and returned a punt for a touchdown.
He will arrive on Notre Dame's campus Friday afternoon and receive a tour, meet with the coaching staff and talk to some of the players. He will attend the Navy game and then spend time with the Irish players.
It is also a chance for him to meet several other Notre Dame coaches.
"Coach Hinton talks to me a lot, but coach Kelly, I don't talk to much," Pittman said. "Coach Hinton was the first guy to give me an offer, and I was so excited."
