NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te'o has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week.
Te'o led Notre Dame in tackles Saturday with 12 and was credited with three quarterback hurries as the Irish defeated Boston College , 16-14, to improve to 8-3. A 6-2, 245-pound junior from Hawaii , Te'o has 103 tackles on the season with 11.5 tackles for losses.
He is one of eight semi-finalists for the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy. The four finalists will be announced Nov. 29 and will attend the awards banquet in Newport Beach Dec. 11. The winners' university will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund.
Te'o is also an academic standout, carrying a 3.31 grade point average in a design major at the College of Arts and Science. He was recently named to the Academic All-Division V team.
In recognition of Te'o's performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the Lott IMPACT Trophy, will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at Notre Dame.
An interview with Te'o can be heard at halftime of Saturday's nationally broadcast game on Sports USA Radio Network. The IMPACT Player of the Week is also featured on FOX college football games this weekend.
The Lott IMPACT Trophy goes to the outstanding defensive player in the country who has had the biggest IMPACT on his team both on and off the field. In seven years, the IMPACT Foundation has donated $850,000 to local and national charities.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Brent Musburger will be the keynote speaker at the banquet, which is annually attended by distinguished former coaches and players. An honorary Lott IMPACT Trophy will be presented to recent Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer.
Other notable performances by Lott IMPACT Trophy semi-finalists were:
- Emmanuel Acho , Texas . Led Longhorns with 12 tackles, including 2 for losses, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one pass broken up in loss to Kansas State , 17-13
- Brodrick Brown , Oklahoma State. Led team with 9 tackles, one for a loss, and broke up three passes in 37-31 double overtime loss to Iowa State .
- Dont'a Hightower, Alabama . Had six tackles and a blocked kick in 45-21 win over Georgia Southern.
- Lavonte David , Nebraska . Had 17 tackles (14 solo), 2.5 for losses in loss to Michigan , 45-17.
- Luke Kuechly, Boston College, Had 14 tackles, his 33rd straight game with 10 or more tackles, in 16-14 loss to Notre Dame. One tackle was for a loss and he broke up one pass.
- Chase Minnifield , Virginia . Had five tackles, one for a loss in 14-13 win over Florida State .
