The decision surprised no one but the timing of Crist's release suggests he will not be part of bowl preparations for Brian Kelly's Irish.
NCAA rules allow for a graduated player with eligibility remain to transfer and play immediately. Crist can partake in spring practice at the school of his choice and suit up next fall.
Crist started one game this season and 10 in his Irish career. He compiled 2,197 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for four scores. His 32 completions last September in a loss to Michigan State is the fifth most in a single game by an Irish quarterback in program history.
Crist's quarterback efficiency rating of 127.0 is the 10th best in program history. Seven of the nine signal-callers ahead of Crist, including current sophomore starter Tommy Rees, played at the program over the last 20 years (John Huarte and Joe Theismann the exceptions).
