Official Visit Primer

Players are coming to campus for official visits before the dead period begins Sunday. So, what does it mean? And what is the key point(s) for each visitor? breaks it down in a reader-friendly format.

It is the final recruiting weekend before the dead period hits once prospects leave campus Sunday, and Notre Dame is using every last minute to host players. While a quartet of players were due on campus, defensive end Ken Ekanem of Centreville High (Clifton, Va.) had to postpone his official visit until January after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and cornerback Marcus Rios of Cosumnes Oaks High (Elk Grove, Calif.) pushed his back into January while he awaits an qualifying ACT score.

However, this is still plenty going on, and breaks down the visitors in this week's primer:

Yuri Wright
Position: Cornerback
School: Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.)
Height: 6-1
Weight: 180 Position Rank: Four-star, 5th
Schools under consideration: Notre Dame, Rutgers, Colorado, Michigan, Georgia
Official visits made: Colorado (12/9)
Official visits on schedule: Michigan (1/13), Rutgers (1/20), another school could be added
What this visit means: Wright always hasn't felt an intense interest from Notre Dame, but he did when coach Brian Kelly stopped by his home this week to meet him and his family.

Wright is an athletic, long cornerback with incredibly loose hips, but he didn't have a stellar senior season. Still, there is no denying his talent, and Wright could excel in the right program.

He grew up a big Michigan fan, and conventional wisdom has Michigan atop his list. However, if the Irish are able to "wow" Wright, it could make for an interesting last month of his recruitment.

Elijah Shumate
Position: Safety
School: Don Bosco Prep
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205 Position Rank: Four-star, 6th
Schools under consideration: Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan State
Official visits made: South Carolina (11/11), Rutgers (12/9)
Official visits on schedule: None set, but two more are possible
What this visit means: Like Wright, Shumate's interest in Notre Dame has fluctuated, but he is making his official visit this weekend.

For a while, it was thought to be a two-school race with South Carolina and Rutgers, but Notre Dame has a chance to change that thinking if Shumate's official visit goes well.

A key will be how the Irish explain Shumate's use in the defense. He moves well and plays downhill, and some colleges think he will grow into a linebacker, although he wants to remain at safety.

There is a lot of ground for the Irish to make up, so having a fantastic visit is crucial. Jordan Westerkamp
Position: Receiver
School: Montini Catholic High (Lombard, Ill.)
Height: 6-1
Weight: 100 Position Rank: Four-star, 38th
Schools under consideration: Notre Dame and Nebraska
Official visits made: Nebraska (10/8)
Official visits on schedule: none
What this visit means: Westerkamp committed to Nebraska in May, and has remained solidly with the Cornhuskers. However, growing up in Illinois, the draw of checking out Notre Dame won out after the Irish extended an offer.

The goal for the Irish needs to be to show Westerkamp how he can fit into the offense, and how quickly he can get involved there. Top Stories
