Heuerman Excited About Irish Offer

Despite a father who played hoops at Michigan and a brother currently playing football for Ohio State, tight end prospect Mike Heuerman could end up at Notre Dame when he ends his recruitment. We spoke with the 2013 target about his offer from the Irish.

One position Notre Dame will recruit hard for the class of 2013 is tight end. With an early offer already out to Pennsylvania tight end Adam Breneman, the Irish found another top talent to their liking and offered Naples (FL) Barron Collier tight end Mike Heuerman.

Heuerman, whose father played basketball for Michigan, also has a brother currently playing football for Ohio State. Does this give either program a leg up on the Irish?

"Notre Dame came through first," said Heuerman. "I was not surprised by the offer as I had talked with coach Alford for about two months now. He told me a few weeks ago all that was standing in the way of an offer was him going through academics and talking with coach Kelly. On Wednesday he made it official."

What is it Heuerman likes about the Irish early?

"I like the way they run their offense," said Heuerman. "My high school also runs the spread so I'm asked to block often and catch often."

When could the Irish expect an on campus visit?

"Right now I'm very uncertain as to where I'm going to visit," said Heuerman. "I'm looking to visit Notre Dame and Purdue during the same trip. I'm also looking to visit LSU, South Carolina and some others during February to early April."

Does Mike expect to feel a pull to either program from his family?

"The way are family is, it's going to be what is best for me," said Heuerman. "If it was only what was best for my family you would see Jeff at Michigan because my dad went to Michigan and that is the way it should have panned out.

"But our father is real understanding with us and wants what is best for each of us and whatever we want to do. Jeff is also that way and he's not going to put pressure on me to go where he wants me to go. He wants me to go where I want because it's my life. So he's real good about that.

"We were talking about that as Ohio State and Notre Dame are two of Michigan's biggest rivals. It shouldn't play too much of a factor just because he went to Michigan because he also went to law school at Florida."

One thing Heuerman does know about the Irish is the fact they use the tight end.

"From Tyler Eifert to Kyle Rudolph who is one of the best in the league right now, Notre Dame has produced some great tight ends," said Heuerman. "I fully expect Eifert to also be good in the league when he gets there. I can see myself fulfilling that role down the road. Notre Dame also took the number one tight end in last year's class."

Is there any concern with the distance from home when it comes time to make a college decision?

"Whether its Miami two hours away or Oregon 18 hours away, it really is not a big deal," said Heuerman. "They are all big time schools and whatever feels right is what I'm looking for."

Does having a brother and father who have both experience the recruiting process help?

"Because I've witnessed it and have them on my side to help me out is huge," said Heuerman. "I don't have to call other people to get answers as I've got two people in my corner who understand it fully."

IrishEyes.com will continue to check with Heuerman in the coming months as he learns more about the Irish.
