Is Notre Dame Still in it for 4-star Payton?

Oaks Christian High (Westlake Village, Calif.) four-star receiver Jordan Payton is nearing a decision. He plans to announce his college intentions in a few weeks, and he spoke to about where Notre Dame stands.

Four-star receiver Jordan Payton of Oaks Christian High (Westlake Village, Calif.) is a few weeks away from making his college decision, and right now Notre Dame is hanging in it but not in the best position.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Payton wasn't able to meet with the Irish last week, and he said he is in the process of deciding whether South Bend, Ind., is too far from home for him to attend college.

"I couldn't meet with them last week and I'm going to make my decision at the U.S. Army game (Jan. 7), so we'll see," Payton said.

Because of the time frame, and since there are only a few days after the dead period ends before Payton announces in San Antonio, is it possible for Notre Dame to still visit Payton?

"I don't know how much time is left after (the dead period)," he said.

Payton made an official visit to Notre Dame in October when he Irish hosted USC. He has also visits to California, Michigan and Arizona State, but he appears to be learning toward Cal.

However, Payton did speak with the Irish staff as Notre Dame tries to hang in with Payton, but it doesn't look good since it is a dead period.

"We talked last week," Payton said. "I've kind of narrowed things down to other schools so we're trying to figure things out."

So, is Notre Dame still in the mix?

"I'll know in a couple of days," he said. "I'm still talking to my family."

While Payton didn't want to give away everything, it is no coincidence the Irish have increased its recruitment of receiver Jordan Westerkamp, a Nebraska commit from Montini Catholic High in Lombard, Ill. Top Stories
